| I have a sneaking suspicion that the Bunnymen are defunct.
Anyway, speaking of defunct, I picked up the Compact SNAP CD by
the Jam. Sort of a best of The Jam CD containing 21 songs. What
a bargain! Over 65 minutes of music.
Songs include:
Eaton Rifles
Absolute Beginners
Start!
In the City
Strange Town
and much more. All very catchy tunes that somehow eluded the American
pop charts.
Sorry to say there's slight hiss in most of the songs, but I find
a lot of New Wave is like that. I can tolerate it because I enjoy
New Wave music.

few tracks which I positively loathe. Apparently those tracks (whose
names I can't remember) were released on EPs towards the end of
The Jam's existence.
I would love to buy the CD since my LP is already badly scratched
(I loaned it to somebody - silly me), but I know that some tracks
are missing.
Please please pretty please list all of the tracks on the CD so
I can decide whether it's worth buying (if I can find it anywhere!)

That makes sense. I used to be a Jam fanatic and owned everything, including
the "Snap!" collection. The vinyl version had a remix of "Funeral Pyre" and
the demo of "That's Entertainment". I found both better than the previously
available versions, in terms of being cleaner mixes.
"Snap!" is one of the better anthologies on the market, in terms of packagaing,
song selection and sequencing. For anyone into The Jam, it's a cheap
alternative, even on CD, to hunting down all the rare 45's and 12" singles. It
includes so many tracks that all but die-hard Jam fans should be happy with
this anthology alone (plus the final album, and possibly the live album).

336.14 | Re - Jam's "Snap!" | DECWET::THOMAS | A legend in his own lunchtime | Tue Jun 23 1987 01:00 | 16 |
| Thanks for the track list. I believe there's a typo (either in .12
or on your CD - where you say "Absolute Malice" it should read 2
tracks entitled "Absolute Beginners" and "Town Called Malice". At
least that's what it says on my LP.
Unfortunately my least favourite tracks on the LP are also on the
CD. They are the last 3 listed.
Although there's no mention of it on the LP, "Smithers-Jones" is
a totally different recording from the one on one of their other
albums (the name escapes me). The Snap version (at least on the
LP) was recorded with regular guitars etc., whereas the other version
appears to have been recorded with violins etc. The words and melody
are the same, but the Snap version is so much better (I think).
Which version is on the CD? .... Mike

Away From The Numbers
Billy Hunt
English Rose
Mr. Clean
The Butterfly Collector
Thick As Thieves
Man In The Corner Shop
Tales From The Riverbank
I happen to love every one of these, except English Rose. They are
all available on various of the Jam's other LPs (I'm virtually
certain).
Although I already have the LP, I plan to get the CD version when
I can find it, so that I can have a "forever" copy, and hope that
the rest of the albums come out on CD.
My tape of the LP is the one I almost always take to play in the

By this, I could only assume you meant that all the songs were
available on LP's other than _Snap!_. After all, you were talking

to say in .20 was that other than on _Snap!_, those songs are not

336.26 | XTC - still great on Geffen | MUSTNG::MGINGRAS | Roll Over, Chuck Berry! | Thu Oct 15 1987 23:11 | 32 |
| I noticed the band "XTC" mentioned elsewhere in this conference
(note 759), but the discussion was limited to the presence (or
non-presence) of a track off the SKYLARKING disc.
Being a fan of XTC I bought this disc without hearing a single track
in advance. This band has evolved quite a bit since "Radios in
Motion" and although they don't exhibit the same raw power I
appreciated in earlier albums, they've developed an usual and beautiful
style.
For those who haven't heard them and have the impression they're
power rockers, that's changed drastically. SKYLARKING is quite
mellow and the band employs the best variety of instruments I've
heard since the split of the Beatles. They pay a great deal of
attention to melody. Many of the songs flow together without silent
breaks and compliment each other well.
Even with their super-clean production (produced by Todd Rundgren),
though, they still qualify for semi-cult status. Songs like "1000
Umbrellas" with its chamber string orchestration are too unusual
for radio airplay.
I'm waiting patiently for domestic releases of "Big Express", "Mummer",
"Black Sea" and some of the others. I have an import copy of "English
Settlement", which sounds about the same as the album in sound quality.
The best thing about the import copy of this is that it contains
some of the songs on the British double album release. In the U.S.
it was released as a single album and missed out on some good material.
At over 60 minutes of great songs, though, the import is worth it.

| XTC fans might like to know that ALL Dukes of Stratosphear material is available
on ONE CD! That is, the "25 o'Clock" and "Psionic Psundance" LP's are combined
on a different-titled CD.
I bought the original "Skylarking". "Mermaid Smiled" is my favourite track; why
did they choose that one to delete in favour of "Dear God"? Why couldn't they
simply have ADDED "Dear God"? What cheapskates!
"English Settlement", once released domestically, better be the U.K. version!
Of all the rock double-albums released since the White Album, this is just about
the ONLY one that I like almost all the way through. In fact, there is only
one song I don't care much for, and I don't DISLIKE it!
Instrumentation is varied, as on "Skylarking". Shades of "Yes", "Emerson Lake
& Palmer", "Genesis" abound, without the pomposity. More like The Beatles if
they had continued to progress along the lines established by "Sgt. Pepper".
Listened to New Order's "Substance" CD last night, and am glad I bought it. I
even like disc 2; sometimes the instrumentals are in fact better!

| "The Compact XTC" is too compact for my tastes. I like all but a small
handfull of the songs they've done from "Black Sea" onwards, and like a few on
"Drums and Wires" as well. "The Compact XTC" includes earlier material when
Barry Andrews was still with the group, and that material nauseates me.
I purchased ABC's "How to Be a Zillionaire" in the cutout bins this weekend,
and was EXTREMELY disappointed. Also, Eurythmics' "1984". This is the second
time I've been burnt by a Eurythmics release (the first was an EP). I thought
I liked both groups (though I dislike the first big Eurythmics hit), but found
both CD's dull, lifeless, plodding, nonmelodic, machine-like and otherwise
boring.

| I highly recommend the following CD's
Rank and File's 1987 release on Rhino records. This is my current
favorite CD. Rank and File has been refered to as a Cowpunk band.
I note a touch of country in their songs, and I still like them
even though I'm not that much of a fan of country and western music.
Best song on the CD is Blackbook.
"Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart" by Camper Van Beethoven.
I picked this up based on my interest in the songs "Eye of Fatima"
and "Turquoise Jewelry" and I am not disappointed. It is my first
Camper Van recording and I'm definately going to have to get some
more. The CD is full of good music, and the music isn't all similar
in sound. It sounds as if they like to try lots of different sounds.
I really like The Dickies "Killer Klowns from Outer Space". The
CD is only 20 minutes long, but all the songs are great. It's a
fun disk and well worth the price to hear the standard circus
caliope (sp?) music belted out on a guitar. I've also seen "Stukas
over Disneyland" out in the stores.
Can anyone supply a review of the CD "If'n" by Firehose? I know
that I like "Sometimes" and "Honey Please", but I'm wondering if
the rest of the CD is worth the bucks. The CD is on the SST label.

every song (except the asterisk's) are on it only in a different order:
> 1 Killing an Arab
> 2 10:15 Saturday Night*
> 3 Boys Don't Cry
> 4 Jumping Someone Else's Train
> 5 A Forest
> 6 Play for Today*
> 7 Primary
> 8 Other Voices*
> 9 Charlotte Sometimes
> 10 The Hanging Garden
> 11 Let's Go to Bed
> 12 The Walk
> 13 The Love Cats
> 14 The Caterpillar
> 15 In Between Days
> 16 Close to Me
> 17 A Night Like This*

So what's the difference? Is one of 'em "live"? Or is one a boot-leg
of the other?
Thanks,

Minor correction..."The Hanging Garden" is on my "Pornography" CD,
*not* "Standing On A Beach".
