324.0. "Purchasing Suggestions" by UNCLE::KIMBLE () Wed Apr 09 1986 16:53

I am looking into purchasing a CD player. Any suggestions as to
    what features are necessary/unnecessary, advantages/disadvantages
between the different brands would be appreciated. I am trying to
stay within $300.00 but will go higher if the advantages are worth
    the cost.

I think if you read notes entered here for the last year you would
find the Magnavox CDs the DEC choice as "a real sleeper". It may
be worth you looking back to a note on Magnavox to get the particulars.

If I were in the market for one, thats what I would buy.

I AM in the market for one, and am waiting for Treismans to have
another sale to get one (FD2041) for 167~. I'm gonna take it home
and put it into infinite play mode for a month to get all the infancy
out of it, and get all the bugs (if any) out of it. Then I'll rip
it apart and install the "Mark Kaepplein" mods. (with help maybe
    Mark?)..

I have the November issue of Stereo Review, which has lab tests,
and opinions of "the new $300 cd players". A pretty informative
article. I'll be happy to send a copy to you internally.

I find remote control with random access a must.

I like remote control in some things, but I make a deliberate
decision to not pay for it in my CD player. In a VCR it's nice to
be able to change channels, FF over commercials, etc. without
getting up. But when I play a record, I want to just play the
tracks I select and that's it.

Any money that goes toward paying for remote control could instead
go for better tracking, D/A conversion, or filtering electronics. I
agree that remote control is nice, but consider that the #1 "bell
and whistle" you are buying is sound reproduction.

I bought a Denon DCD-1000. Random programming, no rc.

An add-on remote control will become available (someday) for the
Magnavox 2041 (maybie 1041 also, not sure). There is a jack on
the back for it, and documentation, but still no product.
