Here in Canada, CDs sell for $14 and up. I recently bought the
new Kate Bush CD, Hounds of Love, for something like $19. Now,
several months later, I see what appears to be the same CD being
sold for $26, with a big sticker saying "Import" on it.
Now I know that in the days of albums, one could find differing
qualities of albums from the same master tape. Is the same possible
with CDs, or are we just seeing a marketing ploy, given that (to
my knowledge) all CDs are imported anyway? If there is a difference,
what might it be? A brief discussion of how CDs are produced (ie,
"pressed" or whatever) would also be interesting.
As well, I understand that there are going to be two CD plants in
North America shortly. Any thoughts on what we might realistically
expect to see happen to prices once North American production fires
up?
thanks,
bob.

CBS is retooling their former Columbia Record club facility in Terre
Haute in a joint venture with Sony to produce CD'S. Just got literature
from them the other day about their new CD club (buy 2 for $1, and
buy 2 more at regular club prices - $15 + over the next year). Still
a real short supply in the local TOWER records store - sales don't
last long. The average here is still about $13.50, but as I reported
earlier (forget which note) heavy competition from an upstart local
stereo/tv department store (The FEDERATED - sorry, Northern Calif
only, so far), is using $12.50 as their median price with most cd's
going for 11.97. What's nice about them is, they get "obscure" cd's.
It's the top sellers that're hard to find, except at Record Factory
or Rainbow Records for $15 - $28 (double lp's).
Suspect the prices will see a decrease within 6 months as these
new plants get their respective acts together. Albums just went
up .75 cents nationwide (good old record industry) as their over-
production of records is beginning to feel the bite of people waiting
for the cd version to hit the racks. By the time this is over, cd's,
cassettes and albums will be equal at about $9 to $10 apiece - still
2-3 years away. Maybe we could set up a special "HOSERS" trade
agreement - one case of MOOSEHEAD for a CD, EH!!!
