304.0. "Good news for folkies!" by FREMEN::RYAN (Mike Ryan) Mon Mar 10 1986 13:09

Rounder Records will be coming out with CD's soon. One of the
guys at Wood & Strings in Arlington gave me this news about a
week ago in the general form, and at the Fast Folk Musical
Magazine Revue Saturday night it was mentioned that Christine
Lavin's "Future Fossils" will be "the first album recorded in an
	attic to be on CD".

This answers the one regret I had in re-starting my stereo
system from scratch with a CD player.

Yeah! That will start to fill the biggest gap in my collection.
Have you heard any mention of how the CDs will be distributed?
I will settle for Rounder's address so I can ask them.
        					Thanks,
        					B.J.

As I mentioned in MUSIC (or was it AUDIO?), two of Rounder's samplers,
THE NEW ACOUSTIC MUSIC SAMPLER and OUT OF THE BLUE, have been on CD
for months now, on the Rykodisc label.

    Jerry,
I'm not a MUSIC (or was it AUDIO) reader, so could you tell us
a bit about TNAMS here. I bought the LP back when it first came
out (Hard to resist at $2.99) and I love it. I noticed that the
CD has a few more cuts on it. Has it made the transition to CD
well and are the extra cuts worth the $14.95 that I'd have to pay
around here to get it? You may, of course, disregard this if you
haven't gotten around to buying it either.
Thanks. The ~$15 you save might be my own.

I was aware of one of those samplers being available - the guy
at Wood & Strings said they originally released it identical to
the record, then added some cuts when they realized they had the
extra space. I don't have it myself (yet).

Wood & Strings will be carrying Rounder CD's when they become
available - the guy I talked to recommended a place in Harvard
Square (*not* the Coop or BCD) as the place to find folk stuff
until W&S starts carrying CD's and loyalty brings me back:-). I
	don't remember the name offhand.

	BTW, Wood & Strings is right in the middle of Arlington, MA;
where route 60 meets route 2A and route 3 and Mass Ave. They've
got a good selection of records, music, and instruments, and
they're good people to talk to. I was taking guitar lessons
there for a while. They also have music seminars with well-known
local musicians (I took songwriting with Bob Holmes, didn't get
a chance to take improvisation with Billy Novick...).

Perhaps they were referring to Briggs & Briggs? B&B does carry lots
of folk/blues/jazz records as well as classical LP's and CD's. I
would assume that once Rounder starts issuing its CD's that B&B
    will carry them.

I just picked up two of the first three Rounder CD's on Saturday
at The Minor Chord in Acton. One is MORE GEORGE THOROGOOD AND THE
DESTROYERS, and the other is a Nancy Griffith (I forget the title,
dammit --- it has the word "Blue" in it). The Griffith is actually
on the Philo label, but as Philo is (I think) owned by Rounder...

The third CD, which I didn't get, is an Alan Stivell album.

I also noticed that BCD had the Thorogood, though I didn't notice
    the others.

    Jerry,

How's the sound quality on the Thorogood disc? I can't wait to try
blowing my speakers with it. As George once said "If it ain't loud,

It sounds good, but I didn't give it a careful listen for sound
quality. Since I already had the LP, I didn't need to listen to
it carefully for the material. I just popped it on while doing
something else. Of course, it's not George's best album (I would
have much preferred MOVE IT ON OVER).

I replied to this over in MUSIC, might as well reply again...

Christine Lavin's "Future Fossils" is also available.

The only one of the new ones I've found was the George
Thorogood (at BCD). I didn't pay much attention to the sound
quality (that not being a major consideration for me), but since
no ugliness forced itself on my consciousness, I presume its
perfectly fine (unlike a couple of other disks I picked up at
the same time, like Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell and (Planet?)
Gong's Camembert Electrique (a Frisbee candidate if I've ever
	heard one).

I highly recommend Nanci Griffith's Once In a Very Blue Moon on
	the basis of musical quality.

Mike, after mentioning Saturday afternoon that I hadn't seen any
more Rounder CD's out yet, when I was in the Square, I stopped
in at Briggs & Briggs and lo! what do I see but more Rounder CD's.
I don't recall all of the ones there, but there was another Alan

It finally happened. Tonight at Newbury Comics (Framingham), I
found an Chrysalis import disc of THE BEST OF STEELEYE SPAN.
I'd rather have the regular Span catalog, but this'll do for
now. Like any "Best of" collection, what tracks are included
are up for debate, but there are certainly some strong tracks
on this one, including: "Gaudete", "Alison Gross", "Cam Ye O'er
Frae France" [might personal favorite Span number], "Let Her Go
    Down", and "Black Jack Davy".

I haven't been home yet to listen to it, but first thing in the

No, no Fairport Convention that I know of, but the next best thing
is two cd's of Pentangle: a "best of" collection (the exact title
escapes me right now) and BASKET OF LIGHT. I bought the former,
which has my favorite Pentangle song, "Cruel Sister"; I haven't
gotten the latter yet, nor the couple of John Renbourn solo cd's
    that I have seen around.

304.19Some good news and some bad newsAKOV68::BOYAJIANForever On PatrolMon Oct 13 1986 21:1830
The good news is that there are at least two Fairport Convention
albums on cd. The (not really so) bad news is that they are two
recent albums rather than "Convention Classic" --- GLADYS' LEAP
(1985) and EXPLETIVE DELIGHTED (1986). Boston Compact Disc has
them for $16.99 each. I'm listening to GLADYS' LEAP right now,
and there is some noticible hiss, but a tolerable amount.

Following the <FF> is what I've found so far of this "type" of
    folk music:

    Fairport Convention
	GLADYS' LEAP Woodworm Records	WRCD007
	EXPLETIVE DELIGHTED Woodworm Records	WRCD009

    The Pentangle
BASKET OF LIGHT Transatlantic Records	TRACD 205
ESSENTIAL ..., VOLUME 1 Transatlantic Records	TRACD 602
OPEN THE DOOR Plaene [Germany]	88443

    John Renbourne
THE ESSENTIAL COLLECTION, VOLUME 1 (THE SOHO YEARS)
					Transatlantic Records	TRACD 603
THE LADY AND THE UNICORN	Transatlantic Records	TRACD 224

    Steeleye Span
THE BEST OF ... Chrysalis Records	CCD 1467

These are in the $16.99 to $19.99 range at BCD, except for the
German Pentangle disc, which is $24.99 (and I haven't bought it).
304.20AKOV68::BOYAJIANThe Mad ArmenianThu Oct 16 1986 00:066
EXPLETIVE DELIGHTED is rather strange. For one, it's all
instrumental. For two, the last number is a medley, including
"Peter Gunn" (much better than Art of Noise's cover, too).
    Nice album, though.

    ...More good news...

I just got a copy of the new Green Linnet catalog, and they
    are offering 3 CDs!

This may sound strange, but I *think* it's these three releases:

    	Christy Moore: Ordinary Man
    	Christy Moore: Ride On
    	Moving Hearts: Moving Hearts

The bad news is the price: $19.50 each. They don't seem to
have their act together about selling the CDs. It isn't clear from
the catalog if it's really those three releases above, (but I'm
pretty sure I figured it out correctly). ...and the postage and
handling charges don't mention the CDs, - I assume it's the same
as the LPs, cassettes, etc. - $1.75 for the first, $0.35 for each
    additional item.

It'll probably be cheaper in the stores, if you can find them.

    The order numbers are:

CD 3301 - Christy Moore - Ordinary Man
CD 3302 - Christy Moore - Ride On
CD 3305 - Moving Hearts - Moving Hearts

Just returned from a trip to Rose Records in Chicago. Their

world. At any rate, I found a Mobile Fidelity release of the
"Tribute to Steve Goodman". I got the album a while back, but
bought the CD anyway. I haven't had a chance to play it, as
I am between players (D5 is dead, Magnavox on order).

At any rate, the kind of folk music I like is finally out on
CD. If only some of Steve's work could have come out while
Steve was still with us. Hopefully more will follow.

a bit off the topic, but...

Rose is huge. And three stories tall to boot! They have boatloads
of folk music, not just a bin or two. I haven't been there since
they added CDs to their collection, but they supposed to have an
        entire floor for CDs now.

The only thing bizare about the place is that the records are all
sorted by label, not by the performers name. The staff really
knows their stuff, and they have many odd labels that you just
        can't find anywhere else.

Just picked up THE CLANCY BROTHERS' GREATEST HITS on the
Vanguard label. These are not original recordings with
Tommy Makem, but re-recordings (from 1973) with Lou Killen.
Still good music. It's listed as a "twofer" (I assume that
the original LP was a two-record set).

The booklet listed these other Vanguard folk CD's:

    Vanguard Twofers:

    	THE BEST OF BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE
    	IAN & SYLVIA'S GREATEST HITS
    	THE BEST OF JOHN HAMMOND
    	THE WEAVERS GREATEST HITS

    Vanguard Popular:

    	JOAN BAEZ HITS/GREATEST & OTHERS
ALISHA [I never heard of this one]

I've seen the Doc Watson and the Seeger discs where I picked

There's good news and (sorta) bad news. The good news is that
Clannad have come out with a new album, SIRIUS. I haven't seen
a vinyl copy yet, but found a CD of it at BCD. It's an import
(on RCA) so it costs extra ($20.99). The (sorta) bad news is
that with this album, Clannad makes a clean break from the
field of folk music. They've drifted progressively more towards
rock, but even with their previous album, MACALLA, they kept a
little of their folk roots. SIRIUS seems to me to be straight
light rock. It's *good*, mind you, but it ain't no way folk
music. If you liked MAGICAL RING, LEGEND, and MACALLA, you'll
undoubtedly like this, but don't expect to hear the "old" Clannad.

(And apparently, they felt Bono Vox's "guest appearance" on
MACALLA was a success, so they have three here: Bruce Hornsby
(on two cuts), Steve Perry (from Journey), and John David
    Souther.)

On the other hand, we have a CD of the Pogues' album RED ROSES
FOR ME, from 1984. Imagine the Sex Pistols playing a traditional
acoustic set in an Irish pub, and you get an idea of what the
Pogues are like. This is also an import and costs $20.99 at BCD.

Well, it goes both ways....I thought the Norman and Nancy Blake
compilation was a "best of" but is apparently just a shrunken version
of "Lighthouse on the Shore" and "Grand Junction" on one CD. Likewise
the new Tony Rice, "Devlin'" combines his last two jazz releases.

Which is OK because you get an hour or more of music.....

Which is not OK because you lose out on some music.....

I think this sort of thing, along with the "extra tracks" phenomenon
will most likely continue until LPs die away and the CD and cassette
will both run 60-70 minutes each....

Shanachie has released Steeleye Span's Parcel of Rogues. I managed to find
what appears to be the only copy in town. Can't wait for the others.

Did anyone else see the Maddy Prior Christmas recording with the Carnival
Band? I heard two tunes during the season over the radio; marvelous. I found
a copy in town, again, the only one, but they wanted 19 dollars for it.

The Best of Sandy Denny showed up in town as well. On Hannibal Records this
is a 73 + minutes of some of the remarkable work she was respsonsible for with
Fairport and Fatheringay as well as her solo excursions.

For the person who spoke of Steve Goodman. There is now one CD available:
Unfinished Business. It's an odd mix of out-takes, production numbers and
a version of My Funny Valentine recorded at the office of his manager between

"The Essential Steve Goodman" is also available on a single disc. I
don't know if any titles were cut from the original two record album,
    though.

Boy, Colorado must be behind the times. The Span and Denny discs
have been in the Boston area for many moons. I believe there is
also one more Goodman than the ones listed in previous replies,
but the title does not leap to mind.
