299.0. "Production cost of a CD album" by TLE::CLARK (Ward Clark) Wed Mar 05 1986 18:34

Topic 297 (price predictions) got me to wondering about the actual
manufacturing cost of a CD album.

I remember that many years ago, when the list price of an LP was
$3.98, the total manufacturing cost of the LP and jacket was about
$0.18. The rest of the retail cost was recording costs, royalities,
    advertising, payola, and PROFIT.

Does anyone know the current costs of producing and manufacturing
an LP and the equivalent CD?

Digital Audio was quoting a figure of about $2 for manufacturing
    costs on a CD.

I believe the original record jacket for the Rolling Stones' Sticky
Fingers cost about $1. It featured a real zipper.
