296.0. "Magnavox 2040 available?" by ZZTOP::SYSTEM () Mon Mar 03 1986 12:06

    Does anyone know if there are still any Magnavox model 2040 CD players
    for sale in Mass or NH? I can find 2041s but not a single 2040.

296.3FD2040 available in Hamburg, NY for $189+8%LEANOV::MCNALLRalph, PCSG-A/AD, Littleton,MA WB2DCLWed Jul 16 1986 17:1520
Well, I know of a source of at least one Magnavox model FD 2040 SL 12 CD
player. However, it's not in either Mass nor NH. It's at the Brand Names
store in Hamburg, NY (near Buffalo) for $189.97 + 8% / 9% sales tax (you
think Tax-A-Chusetts is bad) their catalog number 5950-08.

The interesting thing was that when I mentioned to the sales clerk that
Magnavox had discontinued the model she said they had no such record and
that the information she had indicated it would be in their next catalog.
I then figured out what they have done is pure marketing genius. The catalog
description contains no model number. Accordingly, they can continue to
sell the old model at their standard price and then switch over to whatever
new Magnavox model they replace it with, with little or no change to their
catalog.

Is a 2040 a good bye at this price, ~$205, or at some lower close out price,
if they ever have one, or am I better off considering one of the newer units
in this price range to augment my D5?
