Have compared it with the Sony CDP-302 using the Digital Domain
CD. On the track that produces only square waves, we were not able
to distinguish any difference between the two sets. Thus, I can't
say much about Denon's extra feature in it's digital filtering compared
to the Sony CDP-302.
When you match the output levels of both of these sets, it becomes
very difficult to distinguish the difference between them.
The features offered, coupled with the attractive price certainly
makes it a good choice to buy.
The only complaint I have is the the remote control keys and the
track selection keys don't have a positive feel.
The CD's used during the session includes Mountain Dance, On the
Line, Friday night in San Francisco.

| Thanks for the information. I have done more research and am now
even more impressed with the 1500.
Does anyone know where there are deals ( approx. wholesale ) on
the 1500? Or for that matter on the Denon line? (Also looking for
the Denon PMA 777.) I can get everything locally (Seattle) but I
don't really want to find out later that I was ripped-off.

| Dave,
I don't know the extent of hifi enthusiasm or where you normally shop
in Seattle. But if you haven't checked them out, go to Magnolia HiFi
on Roosevelt and NE 65th Street. They are my first choice for good
equipment (that I can afford, that is!) in the area. Lots of good
stuff look at, including the Denon CD that you are salivating over.
Talk to Ross Benson if possible; he's real smart and I was VERY
satisfied dealing with him when I purchased a couple of components
recently. Ross is very big on the Denon CD players and can tell you
everything you'd ever want to know.
If you're interested, I can give you a detailed account of how I
arrived at the purchase of my Denon CD player. (should probably do
that off-line, though.) I am very happy I bought it. (Unlike what
people who buy Sonys sometimes have to do, I didn't also have to
buy a humidifier, dehumidifier, blow dryer, air gun, or shotgun
to kill my dog with.) (:-})
As for price, Ross gave me an hour of his time plus tons of information
and advice that I had never considered before. My personal philosophy
is that if I had walked out of there to get the cheapest deal possible,
I would have been stealing. If you are the bargaining type however,
Ross would probably be receptive to haggling.

295.4 | loading problem ? | ZGOV01::CTTAN | | Sat Mar 29 1986 21:07 | 10 |
| re: .3
Have you ever encounter any problems of disc loading on this denon
set? So far, I've not been able to load 2 of my discs on the
Denon-1500. I'm not sure if disc warp is the cause or that the denon
is a particularly sensitive player. The disc's that's refusing to
load is Barbra Streisand's The Broadway Album and Steve Wonder's
Songs in the key of life, disc #1.

Nope. I have 19 discs currently, from a range of labels. I haven't
had any indication that it's particularly sensitive. It works like
a dream.
No Streisand or Wonder in collection, though.. Why not bring in your
player to your dealer and have a "chat"?

Got my 1500 3 weeks ago and so far I am very much favorably
impressed. The vast array of programability and features along with
the excellent audio quality and remote control and mostly the price
that goes with it is really quite impressive.
The label that I am going to try to stay with as much as possible
is TELARC seeing as how I have heard only extremely favorable reviews
about the quality of both the performances that they solicit and
the overall recording.
I would really recommend the 1500 to anyone considering the
purchase of a mid-priced but a high performing player. Good product!

I have about 85 cds and have had a few load problems amongst those.
In those cases it appeared to be the way the disc was sitting when
first dropped in; pressing the load button a second time cleared
it. I think that having the eject/load/unload function on the remote
control is a bit of overkill but overall an awfully nice machine.

| I've had my DCD-1500 for a few months now and am very happy with it.
I bought the player in part because of the positive reviews in this
conference. Now I need to upgrade other parts of my stereo system to
the same level of quality.

| I've had two other CD players (Onkyo DX-320, Magnavox CDB-650) and
wound up with the DCD-1500. I played the Magnavox and Denon side
by side, and while both sound good, the Denon seemed "cleaner"
sounding. Admittedly this is totally subjective, but it works for
me.
Also, the Denon played two scratched CD's that caused the Maggie
to have fits or skipping and repeating.
And from a purely physical standpoint the Denon seemed better built.
The CD platter moves smoothly and is solid, and the whole unit feels
solid and tolerant of vibration.
I've got about 90 CD's and have run about another 50-60 borrowed
ones through it without any problems.
I know it sounds like a commercial, but I'm a whole lot happier
with this unit than I was with either of the others.

Since I picked up my '1500 a while ago, it has developed a nasty
habit. After being on for about 10 minutes, it will not load a CD
any more. One places a CD on the tray and loads the tray back into
the machine; the machine doesn't even acknowledge that it has a
CD in it.
Has anyone else had problems like this with their '1500?

| Re: .11
Dave, When my DCD-1500 was new (May '86) I had a problem
similar to the one you're experiencing.
When the player got warm - and it _does_ get pretty warm -
after ca. 30 min or so, then anything that meant moving the
laser assembly took forever, including loading a disc.
As reported in note 372, having the laser servo adjusted fixed
that problem. Maybe your player is having the same kind of
problem mine had? It definitely seemed correlated to the
temperature of the player. It wasn't until the player got warm
that the problems appeared.
Now, more than two years down the road, I still have the
DCD-1500, and it performs very well. The seek-times are slow
compared to many newer players, but the sound quality is still
pleasing. At the time I think it was hard to do better for the
amount of $ spent.
