293.0. "Bad CD Warning" by MASTER::RDONAHUE () Fri Feb 28 1986 12:21
Last night I played a Yardbirds CD that had been loaned to me called
"20 Greatest Hits" released on the Spectrum label (SPEC 85005). This CD is a
ripoff. It sounds like it was recorded off a cheap AM radio. I compared it to
vinyl copies, both original releases and reissues, and the vinyl sounded
infinitely better. Since the reissues also sounded very good I can only assume
that this CD was not made from original masters. The second, and much more
annoying, problem with the disk is that many of the songs have been edited!
One example is the vinyl version of "New York City Blues" runs 4:17 while the
CD version run 1:36. The total running time of the CD is about 45 minutes, so
total time problems cannot be the reason for the editing.
Don't waste your money on this one!
