291.0. "Stick this in your ear !!" by PUZZLE::ECTOR () Thu Feb 27 1986 22:10

Any jazz fans should not miss out on re-issue stuff from Polygram.
With each disk you buy, a catalog of what's available is enclosed.
I hadn't seen some of these in record form in years and was
unexpectedly surprised when I saw them in disc format. Much of the
stuff is from the Chicago-based Verve label and everything is
remastered digitally in Germany at Polygrams labs. I've acquired
5 discs now (3 Jimmy Smith albums, Oscar Petersen Trio - "West Side
Story" and "Jazz Samba" by Getz and Byrd). The hiss is negligible
and the difference from lp to disc is, to say the least, immeasureable.
I highly recommend any of them. Most were recorded in the late 50's
to mid-60's time frame, but some stuff - Billie Holiday and Ella
Fitzgerald et al, are from an earlier era. There's also a series
called "The silver collection" which guarantees over 60 minutes
of music on the disc. Other labels included are; another former
Chicago-based label - Mercury, London, Polydor, EmArcy, Philips,
and MPS. Artists include Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, the
"Velvet Fog" - Mel Torme, early Benson, Art Blakey, Count Basie,
Chick Corea, Ellington, early Mangione, Toots Theilemans,
and as an additional treat, some anthologies of various artists
    from all the aforementioned.

Hope this gives you'all something to spend your money on. Just nice
to see a parent label really get their act together and make the
best use of their vaults. I was in heaven when I put Jimmy Smith's
version of "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" on the player. I'd only
previously heard borrowed scratchy lp copies of this. My downstairs
neighbors appreciated it too !! I'd like to hear any comments good/bad
on any of these - so far, I'm real pleased with my 5 and WILL be
getting more in the near future.
