279.0. "Info on ADC CD-100X for $189.00" by FXENG1::TTESTA () Tue Feb 04 1986 13:17

A friend of mine brought over his compact disc (a portable Sony, though
I don't recall the model number) and let me try it out for a while...I heard
it, I liked it, my wife heard it and liked it, and now we want one. (But don't
want to spend the 300.00 + dollars he paid for his.)
We went to Eastern Discounts in Pawtucket, R.I. which has a limited
selection, but fantastic prices. I found an ADC CD-100X (made by ADC Products
Division of dbx...a BSR company of Newton, Ma.) for $189.00.
It is basically a no frills system that sounds great. It has triple
beam, 16 selection programmable (single-track repeat, programmed-track repeat,
or all-track repeat), single linear D to A converter. It is a front loading
model. (I'd rather have top loading, seems much simpler and harder to break.)
There is no remote, but we decided that with the three we have already there is
enough confusion when one gets misplaced.

Here are the specs from the marketing sheet:

Frequency Response + or - 0.5dB (10Hz-20KHz)
T.H.D. 0.004%
Signal to Noise Ratio 96dB or more
Channel Separation 90dB
Output Level 2V rms
Dimensions 341 x 88 x 293 mm
				13-7/16 x 3-7/16 x 11-9/16 inches

Does anybody have anything good, bad, or indifferent to say about this
particular compact disk model? Who makes the guts? Is it a good deal? Am I
being seduced by the low price? My criteria for a compact disk is simply
good tracking ability, programmable selections, and high quality sound for a
moderately low price.

I don't know if this is good or bad, but you can pick up that unit for $169.00
at Stereo Discounters...It's mail order that I've had good luck with...
1-800-638-3920.

Also, Sony MDR-CD5 headphones go for $67.00.

The best deals I've found lately(the past week or so) are:

	Magnavox 1041BK Service Merchandise $188

Magnavox 2041 Prime Value Mart $169.90
				(thru Feb 22)

	Emerson ??? Manufacturers Marketplace	$158

	ADC ??? " " $158

	Sharp 100B (?) Service Merchandise $158

The only ones I know that have gotten reasonably consistently good
reviews in these notes (and in my own experience) are the Magnavoxes.
	I own a 1040 and like it.

All of the above places have a 7 to 14 day money-back period.

You can also ignore the specs that they publish with any CD player. They
are the appropriate things to measure on a 25 year old turntable, not a CD
player. As long as everyone measures the wrong things, they all get the same
wrong results.

I'd stick with the Magnavoxen in .-1

Well, I was rewarded for my long wait. I went to Eastern Discounts
last night to buy this unit and... LO AND BEHOLD it was on sale
for $149.00. Needless to say I made up the difference in disks!
For such a low priced unit it is fairly solid (very solid compared to
the Magnavox 2040 that was on sale for $169.00 at Prime Value Mart
    last week!)
