275.0. "HOT PRICES - CD's & Player" by PUZZLE::ECTOR () Thu Jan 30 1986 20:27

FLASH ***** FLASH ***** FLASH ***** FLASH ***** FLASH ***** FLASH

Local Consumer Distributors now have the previously reviewed (dissected)
MAGNAVOX 2040/A on sale for $158.00. Dunno if this is nationwide or not
but for sure in California stores. In rebuttal to previous comments, it
does not come with, but will accept, a wire remote. I've had mine for
three weeks (@ $178.00 - $191.00 out the door w/tax) and LOVE IT !!

Word of caution - remove the MAGNAVOX aluminum sticker from the top of
the unit prior to putting in a disc. I tore it off during loading and
none of the controls would work - wierd!!! The outer casing as mentioned
is plastic, but doesn't look cheap. Most people that've seen it say it
resembles the Technics front-panel-wise (I got the dark panel, rather
than the silver-toned one). I recommend it highly to those of you who
don't mind NOT keeping up with the "high-end" Joneses ! This is not just
a good starter, but a great one.

Also - anyone in the proximity of one of the new "FEDERATED STORES" -
they now carry CD's starting at $11.97. Picked up the MOBILE FIDELITY
Original Master Recording of Mathis' HEAVENLY that runs $15.97 normally
for $12.97. Saw almost the whole VERVE catalog for $11.97 per disc. Also
saw stuff on a label that only releases discs (name escapes me now) for
$12.97 - Flim and the BB's record on that label.

Hope this is useful info. Have a ball.

Please forgive the ignorance of this east coast boy, but what is a "Federated
Store"? I'd dearly like to find one.

BTW - Flim and the BB's are found on the DMP label, and $12.97 is outstanding.
Stores here in Greenville SC, are trying to take us for $19-$20 for DMP discs.

I am also on the hunt for a Magnavox 204x for under
$ 180.00 in the Mass./NH area. If anybody knows where
they sell them for that price please let us all know
in this file.

Thanks

re .1

I can't believe it - we actually have something going on here in Calif that
you guys back East can't better. Hardy, har, har !!!

The FEDERATED is a newly opened chain in the West that specializes in
electronics. Dunno what an Eastern counterpart would be - maybe Crazy Eddies
???? in NYC ??? Anyway, I returned the night after writing the initial note
and bought 3 VERVE reissues - Jimmy Smith's BASHIN & WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA
WOOLFE and Getz & Byrd's JAZZ SAMBA. $11.97 apiece. The most expensive disc
I saw was Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life for 23.97 (double disc
set). The selection wasn't terrific, but at those prices - who can complain.
Review on these discs coming in a later note.

You guys don't have Consumers Distributors back there ???? Maybe I should
go into business ??

This month's issue of Digital Audio has an ad for a mail-order place
"Digital Centers of America". Selling the Magnavox 2040/2041 for $179.95

Re .6:
There are many discount electronics stores in the East. But also
note that most us "easterners" are in Mass and NH, which is not quite
as heavily populated as southern California.
NYC has zillions of discount electronic stores, of which Crazy Eddies
is only one of the more well known. In our area, we have Service Merchandise,
a general discount catalog store, which tends to have excellent prices on
electronic gear, though not a large selection. Other chains in the area
are Manufacturers' Marketplace and World Wide Electronics, each with
5 or more stores. Individual discount stores such as Cuomos and Barons
are popular.
Cheap CDs are everywhere nowadays. Prices at the larger chains have
dropped towards the $12 level on the average.

The only thing you have out there that we can't (and don't want to) beat given
time is a herpes epidemic. You can keep it.

Prime Value Mart stores in Fitchburg and Sudbury, MA are advertising
the Magnavox 2040 on sale for $169.90 through 22-FEB. However, they
are presently substituting the 2041 for the sale.
275.11THORBY::MARRAMon Feb 03 1986 14:034
I forget, what was the difference 'tween the 2040 and 2041? was it just
   the D/A's or more?

Also, what's the difference between the 2041 and the 1041? SM is presently
selling the 1041 for $188 (not any special sale). While I'm at it, what's
the difference between the 1040 (which I have) and the 1041? The only
place I know where you can get the 1040 nowadays is at Q audio for $249, which
does not sound like a good deal.

2041 has three speed search, the first two speeds are audible. It has
a connector for attaching an optional remote control. It also has a
transparent window through which one can see the disk. Electronic
differences have been commented on in other notes.
275.14LOUIE::EIRIKURTue Feb 04 1986 13:3933
The 2041 is drastically cost-reduced. The packaging, which looks very similar
to that of the 2040, has been "value-reduced" to flimsy injection-molded
plastic. The four-way rocker button is much stiffer and less positive in
action than any of the earlier units. Trying to push Play, I tended to shove
the unit around, even with a cassette deck stacked on top. The slide-out
drawer has been reduced to a see-through door, and a plastic tongue that
extends to get the disk. This tongue did not have any edge-supports, or
scratch-protection pads that I could see. This may be a reason to avoid the
XX41 series players. You have to place the disk data-side down on a flat
(well, textured) surface. Look at the drawer on your 1040, see the
three disc-protection pads? I went and looked at a whole bunch of
players, every single one that I saw had some protection for the
disc. The JVC had a rigid metal ring in the center, but I assume
that there is blank space around the center hole.

I got one from Consumers on Friday night, and returned it yesterday.
It didn't look or feel like something that I wanted attached to my
stereo system. It didn't sound bad though; for $169.00 it's a pretty
good deal. My sample skipped during the first few bars of each disk
that I inserted during my first session using it. It never did it
again, but this contributed to my returning it.

Who knows what Phillips thinks they're doing?

Does anybody know where I could get a *2040* made after September?
The last run of 2040's are supposed to come with output jacks instead
of the captive cables. All the stores that I've been to have only
2041's.

The $259.00 from Q Audio is high for a 1040. You could get one from
Service Merchandise, until they start getting in 1041's instead.

Again - Treismans in NH has the 2040 for 169.98.

guess it's time to fill the MC to the top!

Where's Treismans?
275.17ORPHAN::LIONELWed Feb 05 1986 11:295
Treisman's is on Main St. in Nashua, NH, and on Rt 125
in Plaistow, NH. For Nashua, take exit 4 off of route 3 North, turn right,
then left at the light onto Main St. Triesman's is in the Simoneau Plaza
on the right about a half-mile up. It's a lot like Service Merchandise.

275.18MTV::SMITHWed Feb 05 1986 13:035
There is also a Treisman's in Manchester on Hanover St. If you'd like further
directions, send me mail and I'd be glad to get them to you.

Forget Treisman's. They are selling you 2041s and calling them 2040s. I
wasted a lunch hour running up there with a friend who wanted to buy what
he thought was a 2040. I don't know if it's their fault (Treisman's). It
looked from the stickers on the box like Treisman's ordered 2040s and
North American Phillips sent them 2041s. It's not really fraudulent because
the box does say 2041BK on the model sticker, but it's very misleading
because the Treisman's circular says 2040, as I mentioned the order sticker
on the box said 2040, but the model sticker said 2041. Evidently North American
Phillips believes that the two are interchangeable (Treisman's personnel
certainly do).

I spoke to Prime Value Mart and they told me essentially the same thing, that
NAP was shipping 2041s instead of 2040s. Does anyone know where you can get
REAL 2040s?
