Based on a very favorable review (9/9) in the December issue of Digital Audio, I just bought John Lewis' DDD recording of Bach preludes and fugues. Lewis is better known as pianist and arranger with the Modern Jazz Quartet. Both the performance and recording are WONDERFUL. This new disc is now my favorite, displacing Bob Jones' DDD recording of Rameau (sp?) pieces played on a synthesizer. Also in the same vein (recordings of classical works by jazz performers), I've been very happy with a Verve CD reissue of a Bill Evans recording of classical pieces. This disc is AAD. Bear in mind that these favorable reviews come from a jazz fan who doesn't know that much about classical music. I'd be very interested in views on these works by a classical fan. -- Ward (I originally entered this a response to 245.0, but decided that it deserved a topic of its own.)

re:.1 I've seen that around, but haven't tried it yet. I was wondering if it's as well done as the older BAROQUE BEATLES album. --- jerry

Re: .0 You may want to check out The Modern Jazz Quartet's ``Blues on Bach'' album, as well as the ``Brandenburg Boogie'' album by Elena Duran, Stephan Grappelli, Laurie Holloway, Allen Walley and Allan Ganley. (My copies of these are both LPs; I have no idea if they are available on disc.)

Miles Davis's Sketches of Spain is out in the CD format. Arrangements of Rodrigo' Concierto de Aranjuez, etc. by Gil Evans. The CD has been out for a while actually. The music is great, give it a try. Enjoy, Sudhir. |
