| So what's the D7 got that the D5 hasn't?
Last December, out in L.A., I was with a friend when he bought
the D5 at $189.95.

| John, it was at $175 or so (unless of course you're refering to
somebody else) [foot-in-mouth-warning]
Well, I just picked up a D-7S for $210.60 and donated my D-5 to a
friend. But for a $35 cost difference I get a battery pack that is
MUCH MUCH smaller than the one for D-5 (which is available at an extra
$60). The D-7 is smaller and has more features (the only ones I've used
so far is the shuffle mode (play tracks in random order) and infinite
repeat (play the disc over and over and ...)). And the D-7 is a bit
more tolerant of sudden movements (not as much as I hoped though).
The battery pack (model # BP200) is the feature that makes the D-7.
It powers the D-7 for 4+ hours (D-5 was only 2.5) and fits right
underneath the D-7 making the D-7/BP200 combo about 1/4 - 1/2 inch
taller than the D-5 by itself. The battery pack takes 8 hours to
charge (24 if the D-7 is on). The D-7 comes with a syntho-leather
carrying case and a nice wide carrying strap (a bit too short for my
tastes though.)
Of course the D-7 comes with the same power supply the D-5 did.
And it also comes the same stereo adapter (miniplug to dual RCA jacks).
If you are going to buy one or the other, but the D-7.
More bang for the buck. Also is a nicer package.
(listening to the moody blues on my D-7 as I write this)

259.8 | Magnavox CD9510 Portable? | CRVAX1::KAPLOW | Bob Kaplow DDO | Thu Mar 06 1986 21:56 | 7 |
| Anyone know anything about the Magnavox CD9510 portable CD player? I
just got a catalog from Srevice Merchandise showing this new unit, and
stating that it is available 3/1/86. List is $229.95, SM price $189.97.
Size and weight appears to be about = to the D5, with slightly more
functionality (memory, repeat?). It comes with an AC adaptor and patch
cord, as does the D5. Given Magnavox reputation for decent low cost CD
players, I thought this might be worth looking into.

259.9 | PROBLEM with Sony D7 compact player | SANFAN::WOODRI | Dyslexia? What's Lysdexia? | Wed Dec 10 1986 21:57 | 36 |
| I've had a *problem* recently with my D7. I bought it about 5 months
ago, and the problem surfaced about three weeks ago. Hoping it would go
away (I'm a true SW engineer!) I ignored it. It hasn't, and I'm
slightly suspicious it's gotten a little worse.
The problem: The player shuts off when it's not supposed to. This only
seems to happen with some CDs, but several, from different brands, all
cleaned off carefully. In some cases, the `start' button will spin the
unit up, the LCD will display "0" then "1", then back to "0" and off.
It seems to get worse if I attempt to ">>" forward over the first track
while the unit is still spinning up. The third time the problem shows
up is when playing in RMS mode; as it plays the tracks in the order
programmed, it sometimes shuts off before the end of the list.
Note that it *never* shuts off during a track, only before or between.
If the CD makes it into the first track, but usually quits when I try to
skip to #2, I can overcome this obstical (painfully) but puttin it in
Search mode and fast-forwarding through track one.
This problem is intermittent in two ways: some discs don't seem to
cause any problems (I haven't noticed any tendency towards a single
label), and it doesn't fail reliably with any disc. On Dire Strait's
"Brothers in Arms" and "Love over Gold", as well as Blondie's "Parallel
Lines", the failure rate at skipping the first track is around 75%.
I've only seen it have this problem on a few of the CDs.
I'll eventually get around to taking it into the shop (I'll report on
the consequences here), but was wondering if anyone else has seen these
symptoms?
BTW: If you're using the Auto power supply, make sure the battery pack
is off. Otherwise you'll blow the fuse in the Auto power supply.
Other than that, I've loved the thing.

259.10 | Trouble reading the directory? | SKYLAB::FISHER | Burns Fisher 381-1466, ZKO1-1/D42 | Mon Dec 22 1986 13:12 | 7 |
| re .9: Sounds like it is having trouble reading the directory.
That seems to be what my D-5 does when it can't read the beginning
of a CD. Usually a cleaning helps, but you said you tried that.
Is the LED dirty? I would not try to clean it without some advice
from others who have.
