| There's a 1-hour special on HBO this month on the making of the album.
I saw it this weekend. Quite enjoyable -- and more than just watching
the recording of the music. One of the more interesting things was
that she worked with Stephen Sondheim on making some slight modifications
to "Send in the Clowns" -- a new verse and the move of "Don't bother,
they're here" from the middle of the piece to the end.
If you can watch it -- do so.
Unfortunately, it wasn't a stereo broadcast.

| I liked too. The new setting of "Somewhere" is quite interesting.
Too bad there were no Lloyd-Webber songs. I would have liked to hear
Streisand do "Don't cry for me, Argentina", or "Memories", but this
is mostly a Sondheim album.
If you like this one, you might also be interested in Kiri Te Kanawa's
album of broadway tunes, "Blue Skies". The songs are generally older
than the ones on the Streisand album. Te Kanawa does not use her
operatic soprano voice on this, but sings in a lower register that
sounds a LOT like Barbra Streisand, but without the tendancy toward
nasalness on open vowels.

| RE: .2 last paragraph
Streisand's nasal tones are apparently part of what she thinks makes her
voice good. In yesterday's Globe, I think in Parade, someone wrote in to
the celebrity Q & A column asking why she didn't ever get a nose job. The
answer was something to the effect that she thought long and hard about
it but didn't want change the qualities of her voice. Subjectivity is the
spice of life!

| re: -1 That's right, she consulted quite a few doctors about her nose,
and none could guarantee that a nose job would NOT change her voice.
So she opted for her voice (and her nose).

| Yup, I bought it too - first day after seeing the special on HBO. There's
one extra song on the CD that's not on the record by the way (Adelaide's
Lament). Went right to "Somewhere", cranked up the amp and wa-la,
the old Barbra is back. Seems as if age is just beginning to be unkind to
her voice - re. "Something's Coming", but generally, she can still hack it.
Loved the Porgy and Bess medley. Who would've thought Bill Friedkin would
be producing videos. Oh well, you've got to start again "somewhere" (yuk,
yuk).
More on Kiri - Haven't heard "Blue Skies" yet, but it's on my list. Think
she was great on the Duetsche Grammaphon/Bernstein "West Side Story".

| Does the HBO special include all the music on the album or is it a
documentary about making the album? If it's the former, I'll wait for
the special to be released on LV disc. Otherwise, I'll get the CD right
now.

| It's just a show about making the album. There's something in the
interview with Barbra in Digital Audio about a 24-track master tape getting
erased, and that the sound in the show came from a 2-track recorder, but
I didn't fully understand that. Read the interview and the review for
more information.

257.8 | more on the Broadway album | FRIDAY::CRANE | Barbara Crane --- dtn 522-2299 | Fri Apr 04 1986 00:14 | 6 |
| I like "The Broadway Album", but find it just a bit disappointing.
The CD isn't the problem--it's just that on this one, Barbra
doesn't ever seem to "let all the stops out", and it would be
most appropo on some of the cuts.

| By the way, CBS-Fox is releasing a videotape of the TV special
"The Making of The Broadway Album" for $29.95.

257.10 | More on Bab's Nose | CHECK::MWRESINSKI | | Mon Aug 11 1986 18:03 | 14 |
| I am not a Streisand groupie (BROADWAY ALBUM is the first I've bought),
but am replying to what I guess is a knock on her nose (picture
*that* if you will) in .3 .
Her concerns about the quality of her voice are legit. She was
probably concerned, not about retaining her "nasal" quality, but
rather the resonance to which a singer's nose contributes. Ever
hear a great singer with a cold? Yuck.
I thought her performances on this album brought some badly needed
restraint to her. In the past I always thought, "Wow, she's got
a great instrument there -- but please BACK OFF and don't try so
hard to impress me!"

257.11 | Maybe if she went with a small label | GRAMPS::WCLARK | Walt Clark | Tue Aug 12 1986 09:17 | 11 |
| In general I like the album, but I get a sense that it was mixed
for the car radio. You know, except for the leadin/leadout segments
her voice is the same loudness no matter how softly or loudly she
sings. I dont think this is her fault, my guess is they recordists
used some compression in the voice track.
As I said I like the tunes and style, I just have trouble listening
to the whole recording, and I think its because her voice never
changes levels.
