| A quick check through my collection revealed the following DDDs...
1. "The Nightfly", Donald Fagan (ex Steely Dan). Great production
and music. Drums seem to be mixed "forward" and
closely miked. I prefer this. Invest the $.
2. "Body and Soul", Joe Jackson. Intersting liner notes concerning
production techniques. This one can be LOUD.
3. "Like A Virgin", Madonna. I found it disappointing sonically.
4. "In Square Circle", Stevie Wonder. Maybe too bright? Not bad.
Also, I believe "Brothers In Arms" by Dire Straits is DDD but I
don't have the CD to verify.
Good idea for a note. I'm getting eye strain looking for the DDD,
ADD, or AAD labeling on the wrappers. Seems to me most of those
that have it (labeling) are AADs anyhow.
Please, noters, more titles!

recorded. One assumes (though it's certainly not necessarily true) that any
album that has been recorded digitally has been mixed and mastered digitally
as well.
Since I'm not sure where you draw the line on "pop" music, I'll add Stanley
Jordan's MAGIC TOUCH to the list of DDD discs.

| Rather then hunting for the DDD markings you can try to look a the side
of the jewel box. If, in the corner, it reads: "DIGITAL STEREO" and not
just STEREO as most pop CD read then chances are pretty high it'd an DDD.
All DDD cd's i've seen carry the DIGITAL STEREO mark, but the reverse
is not always true. Like "The Alan Parson Project, Piramid".
In my collection I have "Ry cooder, bop till you drop"; "Saga, In Transit"
and debatbly pop: "Shirley Bassey, I am what I am" as DDD pop recordings.
The adverbs here (france) further indicate:
Spencer davis/Pete York/Collin Hodginkson, Live together, INAK 8410
Papa Doo Run Run, California Project, Telarc CD 70501
The Alarm, Declarations, IP25887
Madonna, Like a Virgin, WEA 925572
Ry Cooder, Borderline
Joe Jackson, Body and Soul, Pol 3950002, cbs aml 65000
Klaus Schulze, Audentity, IMP
Dan Fogelberg, Greatest
James Harvest Barclay, Ring of changes, POL 6116382
Logic System, Orient Express, RFM TEC 2015
Hope this helps,
Hein.

| In case you didn't know everything on the Telarc label is DDD, even their LP's!
They started as a digital recording outfit making vinyl LP's, thus had a lot of
good quality masters when the CD media rolled along. They seem to understand the
digital recording process better than most, thus the sonic quality of there
disks is usually good.

| RE: .5
The phrases "digital recording" or "digital mastering" on a CD don't mean
anything. That's why the AAD/ADD/DDD code was developed in the first place.
An important point to keep in mind is that a poor recording engineer can
botch an album just as thoroughly using digital recording and mixing equipment
as he can with analog equipment. I have AAD CDs with sound that I consider
superb, and I've heard DDD CDs whose sound quality I consider poor.

| RE .10 How does one get a DDD LP? Doesn't the final D stand for the media?
I believe a digitally recorded/mastered LP would be labeled "DDA".
I believe I read in Stereo Review that, according to it's chief honcho, the
secret to Telarc's sound lies in it's minimalist recording techniques. They
generally use 3 strategicly placed mikes where other outfits use many more.

| When you don't have distortion covering up your mistakes, you have to
be real careful about mic technique. Too many mics will give you
strange interference and phasing effects. Telarc does it right.
Von Karajan does it wrong.
Now, how many pop/rock groups record a real stereo image of a live
performance? Not many.

Nope, the final D is not the media, but the master. Go back and read note #217.5
or #217.10. Maybe Telarc ought to be D0D, as I don't think they edit/mix the
tape, just record live to master digital tape. I think Shefield CDs would also
be in this category.

Yup. GIGO holds for audio. Too bad, as my wife really likes Von Karajan's
interpretations. Also too bad Telarc can't go back 30 years and record Bruno
Walter!

That's funny, my copy has the following statement on the back
"The music on this Compact Disc was originally recorded on analog equipment.
We have attempted to preserve as closely as possible, the sound of the original
recording. Because of its high resolution, however, the Compact Disc can
reveal limitations of the source tape."
To me, this implies AAD (well, maybe at best ADD), not DDD.

- Marillion's Latest album, "Misplaced Childhood" is a real DDD,
though it is not said on the cover, only on the disk.
- Talking Heads's "Stop Making Sense" is a live recording onto some
24-track Sony Digital recorder. (This is an answer to .14)
- Joe Jackson's "Big World" is another live one DDD.
- Depeche Mode's "Some Great Reward" seems to be another very good
sounding DDD-CD, but I do not have it myself (yet).
So, there's loads of DDD's by now, I'd say...

238.33 | I like Zappa's DDD! | STK01::LIDEN | Gsta Lidn, CSC Stockholm/Sweden | Wed Sep 17 1986 03:07 | 39 |
| Re .32:
I bought the disc a while ago and like it a lot! Good clean
sound, new interesting arrangements of old songs, and a couple
of new ones as well. Not too many weird guitar solos either.
Personally I think "Does Humor Belong In Music?" would be a
nice disc to get for someone who hasn't heard much of FZ
before, but who would like to get acquainted with his music.
All the songs are recorded live with no overdubs, but one song
isn't necessarily recorded in one take. Instead, the first
part of a song may be from one concert, the guitar solo from
another performance etc. There is not a trace of rhythm- or
pitch-variations though! I guess that means they really bother
with getting their instruments tuned before every performance.
Value for money is pretty good with over 60 min. of music on
the disc. The liner notes imply that there are more DDD
recordings in preparation for CD-release!
There is a video with the same name as the CD recorded live at
the Pier in NYC. The songs on the video (which was shown on
Swedish TV a couple of weeks back) are not all the same as the
ones that are on the album. Nice video!
Speaking of Zappa, I recently bought one of Rykodisc's
Zappa-CDs, the one with Overnite Sensation and Apostrophe on
it. Of course this disk isn't DDD, but the sound differs
significantly from that of the albums. This is probably a
result of both digital remixing and remastering. Need I say I
like the result? Unfortunately the lyrics to Apostrophe aren't
included with the CD as they are with the vinyl album, but
what the hey!
Applause to Rykodisc for caring about the preservation of (in
my opinion) great music on a great medium!

disc! Ms Turner has had some of the best help available. David
Bowie has written one track, Mark Knopfler another, Ruper Hine two

so on...
Overall a wellproduced album. 50 min. of music.
