234.0. "DIRE STRAITS - RINGING THE LEFT" by OVDVAX::RANKIN () Fri Dec 13 1985 12:07

I've recently purchased the new Dire Straits CD. I have noticed a ringing
noise out of the left speaker during part of the first cut. It occurs
at the same part of the piece every time I play it. Has anyone else
experienced this same phenomena? It is a DDD CD and I am wondering if
there is a problem with this particular copy of the disc. or are all of
them this way. I guess another possibility is that there is something
wrong with my new Pioneer 7010 player but this is the only disc in my
collection that does it.

I never noticed a ringing noise, but then, I've never really sat down and
*listened* to the CD. How many minutes into the track is it? I can check
my copy.

I haven't noticed it either... on the Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms"
CD? Again, how many minutes and seconds into the track is it?

I've listened to my copy many times and have not noticed it. At what time
does it occur?

The ringing seems to happen around 1:40 into the first cut. It also happens
later in the cut. I have taken the CD to a friends and it is the same on
his completely diferent equipment. Could any of you check out yours and
see if there is anything resembling a ringing that starts around the 1:40
to 1:50 part of the first track. If not, I still have my receipt and I will
take that sucker back and get a new one.

Thanks,
JR

I checked my copy and I don't hear any ringing. I do hear the tamborine
clearly though it starts before 1:40... so I doubt that is it. My copy
sounds fine.

I did hear something on my copy that could be considered a ringing
sound. Right between 140 and 141 there is a high pitched squeek which occurs
when a guitar player, probably Mark Knopfler in this case, slides his hand
up or down the neck of the guitar while keeping his fingers lightly pressed
against the strings.
I've had my CD player for about a week now and have noticed things
I've never hear before; brass players/singers taking breaths, people turning
pages, . . . my wife even heard a 'splat' from a trumpet during the Star
Wars Theme on Star Tracks.
I think AT&T just lost their slogan. This is the "Next-best Thing
to Being There"!

This is getting strange. I listened carefully to my CD of BIA with headphones
and at the aforementioned point I *did* hear what sounded like a very faint
ringing noise. I doubt that I would've *ever* heard it if I wasn't listening
for it because it was so faint. It sounds as if someone shook some bells,
but it only lasts approximately a second. It would seem a natural part of
the music if it wasn't for the fact that it only shows up at that spot for
such a short time.

Well, I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Yes, listen to the music -- it's the bells on the tambourine. It
    occurs at around 1:33, too.
