228.0. "CSN (&Y) on CD" by TURRIS::WINALSKI () Sun Dec 08 1985 16:34

I heard on the radio today that DEJA VU by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
is now available on CD. Are any other CSN[&Y] albums on CD?

Haven't seen any but a live "Allies" concert disc listed in the mail
order catalogues; but I was just at Rock'n Mania in Framinghan (off Route
9) today, and they had "CSN" and "Daylight Again". I bought "CSN", its one
of my favorite albums by them. It has a little hiss in a few quiet spots,
but you have to remember its from an analog master made in 1977 ... All
in all, better quality than the record, as you would expect.

Have you actually seen DEJA VU in the stores? If you do, I might be interested
in getting a copy! That the "unlabeled one" (just says Crosby, Stills, and
Nash" with a picture of them on an old couch?). I would like to get CD
copy of my favorite song of theirs: "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" !

re:.1
	I have seen DEJA VU in the stores and a friend of mine has purchased a
copy of it. I am hinting for "Santa Claus" to bring me a copy of DEJA VU for
Christmas!
	A little off of the subject, but I saw a show Saturday night on a
Denver TV station called DEJA VIEW. It was hosted by John Sebastion (sp?) on
the Loving Spoonful and had a guest spot by Graham Nash. It this a regular
show like Night Tracks? Really enjoyed it.

RE: .1

No, DEJA VU is not the album with "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes." The album you
are thinking of is titled simply CROSBY STILLS & NASH.

Sorry to mention "records" in this file, but I have two CSN album's entitled
just "CROSBY, STILLS & NASH". The older one (I think; has no dates or anything)
is Altantic # SD 19117, and has 'Suite" Judy Blue Eyes" starting off as the
first track on side one. The cover has a picture of the three of them on
an old couch.

The second, has a big dark grey CSN behind the "CROSBY, STILLS & NASH", 1977,
I think, Alantic # SD 19104, with a black cover, and a paste-on color photo
of the three of them on a yacht at sea.

I assume the latter is the "CSN" album (which I have on CD). But, whats the
name of the first?

My real goal is to find a CD with "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" on it. Any comments
on the above, or pointers or info would be helpful!

Thanks!
	- Bill (Yes, a CSN lover!)

The title of the first album (which is the first album the three did together)
is simply, CROSBY, STILLS & NASH. It is the album on which "Suite: Judy
Blue Eyes" appears. It came out some time in the early '70s, certainly
before 1973.

	Allies - Atlantic WCD80075
	Daylight Again - Atlantic WCD19360
	Crosby, Stills and Nash - Atlantic WCD19104
plus
	Deja Vu (CSN+Y) - Atlantic WCD19118

I momentarily got my hopes up, after reading .-1, but checking the number
against my CSN disc reveals the "Crosby, Stills and Nash" CD is the CSN album,
and not their orginial first album. Oh well ...
228.9CSN First Album DatesUSRCV1::THOMPSONPPaul ThompsonTue Feb 03 1987 11:307
    Just some additional information on the first CSN album. The song
    "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" was performed by the group at Woodstock
    in August, 1969. I believe that the album came out about the same
    time. This was the album that was rumored to have been performaed
    entirely by Stephen Stills. I never heard a confirmation of this
    rumor.

228.10What mean "Perform" ?NWD002::WARRENJATue Feb 03 1987 16:446
    Paul,

    Is the rumor that Still played all of the instruments?? That seems
    kind of unlikely to me.

    tom ( who likes his CSN with Y better )
228.11He played most of themNWD002::WARRENJAFri Feb 06 1987 19:326
    Well, the rumor was mostly correct. The liner notes from the CSN
    album credit Stills with lead guitar,bass, and organ
                 Crosby with rythm guitar
             and Dallas Taylor with drums

    According to the rumor, Stephen Stills played all of the instruments
    on the first album. I don't know if it's true. I do remember that
    they mentioned at Woodstock that that was the first time they played
    "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" in public. Maybe the other members were
    still learning the song.

    It's out! The first CSN album is available, just picked it up today.

    Crosby, Stills & Nash  19117-2

    The CD looks just like the album except that the drawing that
    accompanies the words on the album is not present.

    It's great to hear "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" without the annoying
    skip that my album developed during a college party!

228.17CSN: bad remix?REGENT::POWERSWed Aug 19 1987 10:2913
The first Crosby, Stills, and Nash album is indeed one of my
all-time favorites, and I bought it as soon as I could after
I got my CD player, but I am very disappointed in the mix.
It's really muddy and bassy/boomy. I did an A/B comparison
between my new CD and my old well-worn record and the record
sounds better! The frequency bias is confirmed by my equalizer/
spectrum analyzer. It's not a problem with my player, as this is the
only disc I have that has this trait. Has anybody else observed this problem?

- tom]

PS: My favorite cut is 49 Bye-byes, followed by "Helplessly Hoping" -
"Judy" got too much play and went stale on me.
228.18Blind Faith CD also sounds MuddyAQUA::ROSTAre we having fun yet?Wed Aug 19 1987 11:198

    I thought the same thing when I heard the Blind Faith CD....

    I don't think some of the record companies care about the sound
    when they do CD reissues.

    Sometimes I doubt they even bother to remix.

228.19REGENT::SCHMIEDERWed Aug 19 1987 12:3036
This is disheartening, since the VERY first thing I noticed upon unpacking my
Magnavox CD player a few weeks ago is that CD's tend to have more consistency
than vinyl in terms of EQ and volume levels between tracks and between discs.

It may not have been in this conference, but I pointed out earlier that Music
& Sound Output had an EXCELLENT article in a recent issue (June, I believe) on
CD remixes. They took a survey of each major label, and interviewed the main
people responsible. The philosophies vary markedly from company to company,
and the results reflect these differences (although I should point out that
there's more than one valid way to do a remix). MCA is the clear leader,
based on the discs I've heard so far.

I was planning on replacing my worn-down CSN(Y) records tonight at Lechmere
while the Warner/Atlantic/etc. sale is going on, but now I think I'll just
eventually replace the vinyl with vinyl (my copies were found for 25 cents
each at some garage sale, many years ago, and were apparantly used as frisbees
by their previous owners).

I'm not that big a CSN(Y) fan, and believe most of my favourites (if not all)
are on the "So Far" collection, along with a fair amount of Stephen Stills'
solo work (probably on his elusive "Best of" collection) and maybe two Crosby
& Nash pieces ("Immigration Man" and "Taken at All"; most of the others wear
thin on me VERY quickly). Also some songs from the 1977 CSN album. I find
Stills' playing very warm, and Crosby's voice is hard to match, but despise
Graham Nash and don't think Young works well in the context of the other three
(although I like much of his solo material). In general, I find most of
Stephen Stills' material lacking in depth and repetitive, although pleasant to
listen to. David Crosby seems to have written just one song ("Triad") which
he keeps rehashing over and over again. And Graham Nash is too bubblegum
pop-ish even for MY tastes (after all, I'm not ashamed to admit that I like
ABBA!). All the same, their music is rare among rock music in that it isn't
compatible with rice krispies, so a GOOD CD copy would be appreciated.

228.20Another MUDDY copy #%@%%!!!!BPOV09::JMICHAUDThink about software that thinks!Mon Apr 25 1988 12:078

    Speaking of muddy sound? Try a cd copy of daylight again! This has
    to be one of the worst mastering jobs of the century. This is like
    listening to the music with baloons over both ears! Whoever was
    at the switchboard must have forgotten to remove the cotton from
    their ears after a kiss concert.

228.21bad experiences with CSN CDsKOALA::ABBOTScott AbbotTue Aug 09 1988 14:3922
    I realize this may be an old subject, but I didn't see any
    mention of my experiences with CSN CDs.

    CSN is one of my all-time favorite groups, so I was more than
    disappointed when I got the "CSN" CD (the album with them in
    a yacht). They actually transferred one song ("Cathedral", one
    of Graham Nash's best) at the wrong speed!!!! Just compare it
    to the LP version and the difference is obvious.

    Does anyone know if this has been fixed in a reissue? I've had
    my copy for about 2 years now. The copies in the stores still
    say pressed in Germany on the back, I think they are still the
    same pressing.

    Also, I was very disappointed with the mastering (or lask of it)
    on Deja Vu. It sounded like an old cassette, with crackly highs
    and the flutter between the tracks. (sorry if I'm not using the
    technical terms)

    Scott Abbot (who now tends to avoid almost anything from Atlantic
       records unless he knows it is remastered)

    Another related CD has been released. Wind on the Water, by Crosby and
    Nash is out. I picked it up a week ago at Acton Music. Sounds very
    good. Seeing this album hasn't been in the stores for a few years, I
    was happy to see it released on CD.

228.26How to get to 4 Way Street, please.MQFSV2::LEDOUXReserved for Future UseMon Oct 17 1988 14:1416
    As Scott, in .23 and .25 I am hoping to see 4 Way Street from CSN&Y.

    I have been waiting for that CD for ages, every time I visit a CD
    store, I always stop by the CSN&Y bin and look for 4 way street.

    Here in Canada, we get the "oldies" from 6 months to a year after the
    U.S.* So If any one see the 4 way Street, please put a note in this
    file. The next day I will drive south until I find it.

    * As an example, I bought Alan Parson's Tales of Imagi.... in Boston
      6 months before it came out in Montreal.
      I have Crosby's If I could only remember my name (bought in Nashua,
      N.H.) and it is not out in Canada yet. So does Genesis Live and
      Foxtrot. (Unless I want to pay big $ for import on Virgin/Charisma)
