227.0. "Confusion in Sony CDP-land..." by NACHO::MCDONELL () Thu Dec 05 1985 23:08

Ok, I am fully impressed with the merits of CD technology, convinced it will
not go the path of 8-track cassettes and the RCA laserdisc, and crazy about
the absence of the pops/cracks/hiss/etc. of the traditional vinyl media. It's
high time to dig into the Christmas budget and invest.

I did my homework, asked around, read every current audiophile rag I could get
my hands on - and decided to go Sony.

Of the three current, "third generation" models, I chose the CDP-102. It had
the specs and advanced internal features (Unilinear Converter System, Digital
Filter and Oversampling) of the more expensive CDP-302 - minus the random
track programmability (with remote control, who needs it?). The less
expensive CDP-70 (which Sony was billing as their "newest addition" to the 3rd
generation family) didn't have the esoteric internal features and specs, so I
wrote it off (going for SOUND here, not bells/whistles). Curiously enough,
the -70 DOES have two features I'd like to see in the -102: a headphone jack
and real push-button controls (instead of those damn soft-touch membrane
types).

So, I get a decent sale price at good 'ole Lechmeres ($349) - but low and
behold I wind up with a rain check instead. So now I'm all set to head back
to pick up the unit when I see vague mention (in a generalized SONY ad in this
week's TIME magazine) of the SONY CDP-70B CD unit.

None of my audio-babbling friends have any idea of the difference between the
CDP-70 and the 70B. Could it be that I've stumbled upon my ideal unit (that
is, the inexpensive -70 with upgraded filtering, UCS, et. al - including real
pushbuttons and phone jack?)

Please, folks, fill me in. My rain check expires in a few days...

Thanks in advance,
David McD

The suffix "B" on Sony models almost always indicates "Black". If they
make changes to the features, they give it a new model number.

If you have settled on the Sony models, you might want to check around for
price. I had a CDP-102 which I purchased from Lechemere at their normal
list which was $399 (still less than the manufacturer's latest "list" of
$550 on their dealer's sheets) and was hoping that the unit would go on sale
within the 30 days. I found that a place called LaBelle's Camera
and Video of Maine (they also have a few places in NYC) sold both Sony and
Technics cheaper than Lechemere. They have an 800 number where they will
quote you prices. You can either go to their store to pick-up items or have
them send it to you. If they ship something to you, you don't pay tax so
that the shipping portion is basically a "wash." The equipment which I have
purchased from them was not "grey market" and had U.S. guarantees on it.
It is also the type of place where one can "bargin" a bit especially if you
can tell them of competitive prices elsewhere.

Just a thought....Good luck with your purchase.

Lectra City also carries they Sony models you've referenced. I thin
they also appear in the Service Merchandise catalogs.

Did you try Treisman's? They're on Daniel Webster Highway in Nashua.
I bought my technics player there for half the price that it was selling
for at Audio Acoustics just a mile down the road. Maybe they'll have
just as good a price on the Sony models.

I believe the CDP-70 has a lead screw mechanism whereas the x02 series has
a linear motor to transport the laser mechanism.

I received a note in the mail today from Lechmere's re: my 11/23 rain check
on the CDP-102. They are unable to obtain any more units from Sony, and I'm
SOL. (Lech's did offer to apply a similar percentage discount to a like
priced model of a different brand...but I think I'll look elsewhere.)
