208.0. "Classical Guitar CD's??" by AKOV75::BOYAJIAN () Thu Nov 14 1985 06:37

I haven't noticed any classical guitar CD's anywhere. Has anyone else
seen any? I'm especially interested in Segovia and Montoya, but I'll
give anyone else a try.

A few days after I entered .0, I noticed that the Harvard Coop had a small
section labelled "Guitar" among their Classical CD's, and I bought a
Julian Bream and a John Williams. I also found another disc of each else-
where later. I'm still surprised that RCA hasn't issued any of their
Segovia albums on CD though.

Speaking of John Williams, does anyone know if any of the Sky albums have
been issued on CD?

I answer my own question: I just picked up Sky's album CADMIUM on CD this
weekend at the Coop.

Jerry,

   tlh and I are also Sky fans. The "Cadmium" disc was one of the first
CD's that we bought after getting our player (11/84). Overall, "Cadmium"
is fine but I'd really like to see some of the earlier albums come to CD.
(After all, who could live without tuba solos on CD :^)
   Let us know if you hear of any others.

re:.4

Will do.

By the by, a friend I visited whilst in Minneapolis had a CD with Bream
and Williams playing together. Unfortunately, I forgot to get from him the
title, label, etc. before coming back home. I'll have to give him a call
soon, so I can go looking for it.

208.6Recommendation for Disc'sCEDSWS::NEWKERKSun Mar 02 1986 04:1920
    I don't know if these qualify as 'classical' but they have both
    given me MANY good hours of listening and are guitar albums.

    Friday Night in San Francisco Colombia CK37152

    and

    Passion, Grace, and Fire Phillips 811 334-2

    Both of these feature Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, and Paco DeLucia.

    The Passion, Grace, and Fire CD is a digital recording but the sound
    quality on the live disc is also great. These can usually be found
    in the store under Al DeMeola's name in the Jazz section.
    John McLaughlin you probably know about, Al DeMeola is jazz influanced
    and Paco DeLucia is a Spanish player. Paco also appeared in the
    film version of 'Carmen' that was produced in Spain and also stared
    Laura Del Sol.

    I will second the recommendation for "Friday Night...." I'm happy
    to see that PG&F is out. Yay!

    Don't, however, listen to this music if you are a frustrated guitarist.
    (Like me.) It'll only make you cry. |^{ :^)

    Yeah, kinda makes you want to smash your fingers with a beer bottle,
    doesn't it?

    re:.6

    I already have FRIDAY NIGHT..., have had it for some time. I didn't
    know that PG&F was on CD. I'll have to look for it.

208.11Segovia, Montoya, and BoydCOMET2::LEVETTWed Apr 23 1986 19:526
    Just a note of clarification...Segovia is classical and Montoya
    is flamenco. To many it probably doesn't make a difference, the
    music is still wonderful. Liona Boyd, she plays a mean classical
    guitar, will have to pick up some of her cds.

    Highly recommend Liona Boyd, Live In Tokyo. Its DDD with a pretty
    quiet audience.

    Has anyone sampled Boyd's Persona CD? I was wondering what kind
    of deviation she has made from playing the classicals on this? I
    can't find anyone that has heard it to recommend it. Apart from
    the performance, what about the sound quality?
208.13Guitar Concerto by John WilliamsDECSIM::KADKADECum dignitate otiumMon Apr 27 1987 10:4013
	Just picked John Williams performing music composed by Joaquin Rodrigo:
	Concierto De Aranjuez and Fantasia Para Un Gentilhombre. I've heard
	the Romeros do the concerto on radio (CD by Phillips, I think) and
	I liked the Williams disk better. The Adagio is very smooth and
	free-flowing, helped along by an excellent english horn solo by
	Christine Pendrill. The orchestra (Philharmonia Orchestra, directed by
	Louis Fremaux) does not overpower the guitar as in some of the older
	recordings and blends in very well. I recommend this CD highly.
	The number is CBS (Masterworks) MK 37848.

	Enjoy,
	Sudhir
208.14Segovia on CDDECSIM::KADKADECum dignitate otiumMon Mar 14 1988 14:5223
	MCA have finally released some Segovia on CD. There are three
	volumes: the first is music by Bach, including the Chaconne;
	the second, Fantasia para un Gentilhombre (Rodrigo), Concierto
	del Sur (Ponce) and Castles Of Spain (Torroba); and the third,
	selected (by Segovia) solo guitar music (Albeniz, Granados,
	Castelnuovo-Tedesco, etc.).

	I've heard only Vol. 3 (the rest are on order thru' the CD club)
	and I must say that the sound was too reverberant and somehow
	distant. This could be because the recording is AAD, or poor
	original recording; despite this I enjoyed the music and
	there is a lot to enjoy (over 1 hour). If you want better
	sound and the same music (Recuerdos de Alhambra, Sevilla, etc.)
	some of these pieces are included in Julian Bream's Guitar in
	Spain CD. For someone who would not buy a lot of guitar CD's
	I'd recommend the Bream CD over Segovia vol. 3, the selection is more
	varied and the playing more polished. Of course, if you are like
	me you'd get the Segovias anyway, especially the Bach CD (vol. 1).
	I'll post the reviews of the other two volumes when I get them.

	Enjoy,
	Sudhir

    Re. 14

    I have volume 2. I think the playing is superb. Much of the recording
    is in mono, and if you read the liner notes carefully, you'll see
    that some of the recordings are from the 1940's and 50's.

    Certainly not state-of-the-art technology, but the music is till
    enjoyable.

        A fair number of the John Williams CDs are available at the
        Lechmere in Nashua. They're in the section organized by artist
        after the main classical section. Opposite them there is a very
        small section of classical guitar pieces in the section arranged
        by instrument.
