202.0. "D5s and Ozone?" by SCOTTY::CREASER () Wed Oct 30 1985 08:43

I am curious if anyone else has noticed a strong Ozone like odor near their
D5 when changing disks etc. Mine does each time it have been playing for
more than a minute or two. There is no sign of the odor when power is applied
but the player is not active. I also noticed that the inside of the lid appears
to be "etched" as though it have been exposed to some caustic vapors.
At first I was concerned about potential power or circuit problems, but now
I wonder if it might be caused by the interaction of the laser with the
surrounding air?

I doubt the laser is powerful enough to do anything to the air. I have
not noticed any of the effects you mention - perhaps you have something
else nearby that is causing these problems?

The odor follows the D5 wherever I position it. It seems to build-up inside
the case and is strongest when the lid is opened.

A new audiophile reason against CD's - they cause cancer :-)

Yeah, the also cause this burning sensation in my wallet. :-)

I've been noticing the same smell coming from my D-5 when I lift the lid to
remove a disc. It smells like a very warm power supply to me. I haven't
investigated further, as the D-5 is working perfectly.

Re: .5

Ditto. (Ozone? How about "warm plastic")

Well it's still a mystery, but two other possible sources have been suggested.
Perhaps the disk drive motor or laser positioning servo. Considering that
pleasurable music it provides to me, I would have preferred a floral aroma.
