196.0. "D-5 replacement, = D-7" by EUCLID::PAULHUS () Thu Oct 17 1985 12:19

I just saw in, of all places, U.S. News and World Report, that Sony
has come out with a reply to the Technics portable player. It's the
D-7 and is about 3 oz lighter and a bunch thinner. The front panel
looks like my D-5 so I don't think there's much new in functionallity
(that aspect of the Technics is still unchallanged). The list price is
the same: $300, but the carry case, batteries, charger, adapter, etc
are now all included in the package. [ And they've made the darn cover
opening button that's flush on the D-5 and that I've often mis-hit,
	convex.]

It is my understanding that the D7 is programable (like the Technics) and
that the battery fits in the D7 itself rather than in a separate case as
in the D5.
I have a friend who works for Bose and went to the announcement press conference
in NYC earlier this week. I'll give him a call and find out the scoop.
Also, Sony is working on a version of the D5/D7 with a build in AM/FM receiver.
Sony is being VERY closed mouth about it so I can get no details as yet.

I just got some additional information on the D7. The D7 is thinner than
the D5 and comes with a flat rechargable flat battery pack (similar to the
battery in Polorid SX70 film, but rechargable). When this battery is attached
to the D7 it is then about the same thickness as the D5. There is also an
optional case that uses penlight batteries rather than the rechargable battery.
This case is similiar to the D5 battery case but smaller. The impression
I get is that the case with penlight batteries gives longer playing time
than the rechargable flat battery that comes with the D7. The D7 is
programmable like the Technics player (I don't know what programming functions
are available).

Although the D7 was announced last week in NYC, I was told that you should
not expect to see it in stores until Jan. (although Sony may release a few
to their best retailers for the Christmas rush). I think that their stratagy
is to push sales of the D5 for Christmas, by announcing the D7 and having
people buy the D5 because they can't find a D7. The price of the D5 will
of course be lowered to well below the $300 price of the new D7. Sony has
also indicated that they may announce yet another portable CD player in the
Jan. timeframe. This unit will have all the features of the D7, but will
also include a FM radio receiver (the ultimate walkman!!??!!). I have heard
that Sony had the FM version CD player ready for some time now but have not
announced it because there is no competition and they don't want to hurt
sales of the D5 (and now the D7). Also, Technics has yet to ship a single
unit of their portable player so Sony is still in the driver's seat and don't
need to announce any other portable CD products.

I hope that this helps anyone who is considering purchasing a portable CD
player in the near future.

If the penlight batteries last longer you have the best of both worlds by
using [GE] rechargeable AA batteries. You have the better power source,
and rechargable batteries!

I've heard of a Pioneer portable_CD player mentioned with the Technics soon-
to-be-out one. Anybody know about this unit (especially availability)?

Thanks,
 Erik

and has been since before Xmas.

Anyone have an idea of the differences between the D7 and D7S?

196.8Just guessing, but...HUMAN::BURROWSJim BurrowsFri Jan 02 1987 15:146
The difference between the D5 and the D5S was that the D5S
included the player (the D5), and the batery pack and a pair of
headphones. I would imagine the D7S is a package that includes a
D7 and some other optional stuff (like the AA battery pack).

My D7S included the player (labeled D7S), battery pack, carrying
case and strap, AC adaptor, and line out cord. No matter now,
since the unit bit the dust just before Xmas (34 days after
purchase) Lechemere cheerfully refunded my money, and explained
that the D7S is no longer made, replaced by the D77, and that
all portable CD players are sold out till after the holidays.
So, I'll start looking again in about a week.

Interesting. I had two D7S's croak (and one D55) in about a month.
It appears that Sony has a very good quality control system; none
of it is escaping the factory.
