192.0. "Sony Digital Audio Club" by BABEL::LIONEL () Mon Oct 07 1985 23:19
Many of you have probably seen ads for the "Sony Digital Audio Club"
(or something like that) in the magazines. The ads say for $15 you
get a "digitally recorded CD", a poster, and offers of discounts on
merchandise. Well, I sent my $15 back in July and, lo and behold, on
my doorstep today (three months later - forget "6-8 weeks") is a
package from Sony. Let's see what's inside:
A nice jazz sampler CD, digitally recorded and definitely
NOT compressed. Sounds wonderful, though jazz isn't my taste.
Reprints from Audio and Stereo Review on the D-5, CDX-R7,
and a (very) technical article on error correction in CDs.
A small glossy brochure on the D-5 (not interesting, I already
HAVE a D-5!), and a large one on the CDX-R7.
A reprinted item from Stereo Review on "Answers to your Compact
Disc Questions" (one of the better such I have seen)
And, finally, a "notice" that the "Sony Book of Digital Audio
Technology" is being reprinted and will be shipped separately.
The article on error correction above shows this book - hefty
looking.
No poster (small loss), no info on discounts, no word on what else I supposedly
get for joining. We shall see. (Now if only my Dr. Demento T-shirts,
also ordered in July, would show up...)

| How is the book? Does it provide more information than Stereo Review?

| I concur with .1
I joined the club one year ago and also received two posters, the disc,
the book, etc.
Actually I found the book to have little information on the CD. It's
mostly information on the generic digital audio (PCM, etc)
My intro kit promised newsletters at least four times a year, but so far
zip!
