| I once owned the SLP-7, but after a couple of months of trouble free
use, the drawer refused to stay in. I returned it for full credit
and got the Sony CDP-102.

| I have an SLP8, purchased December '83. Used heavily. NO problems whatsoever.
I know another SLP8 owner, purchase date ~June 84, no problems.
I like its programming features (specifically play track n through m by pushing
N MEMORY MEMORY M), it seems to be quite resistant to external shock, it sounds
great, and it has a two year warranty.
Maybe you have a lemon and/or the repair shop you frequent is incompetant. Why
don't they give you a new unit? Just what is the problem anyway?

| re: .2
I loved the features also on the SLP8. I am not convinced that the
one I have is a lemon because of the other two units of friends of mind. Their
SLP8's were purchased about the same time I bought mine and they are having
the same type of problems.
The problem starts when you first insert a disk to be played. You
press 'play' and nothing happens. The only way to 'stop' is to open the door
and reclose. If you select maybe track 5 (start incrementing up from 1), it
will play fine until the end. The other symptom is by monitoring the time and
pressing the fast forward or fast reverse, you always get fast forward.
I am not too sure about the dealer, although they are one of the
largest if not the largest dealer in the Colorado Springs area. I will say
that after they work on the unit it does perform fine for about 2-3 months.

| I got my SLP8 in Denver at Listen Up. You might call them to see if they have
had the same problem with SLP8 units they have sold. They also have an
*excellent* service department.
It sounds like maybe the switches are punting. Does the same thing happen when
you use the remote to actuate the PLAY or >> functions? What do they tell you
they fix when you take it in? (Maybe they just squirt some cleaner or something
somewhere and not really fix the problem.) Can you just open the drawer, plunk
down a disk, and hit PLAY without closing the drawer (from remote or front
panel)?

| Or are you destroying the logic with ESD or line surges??? Find out what they
are fixing!!! Also what they think is causing it.
The line surges are no joke! I lost the remote control section on a Sony
reciever recently. (I know it was the surge, I was home when it happened!)
Thank God it was still under warranty!! The board they replaced was > $75!!!!!

| re: .4
The same problem exists whether I use the switches on the front or if
I use the remote control. The repair people tell me it is a problem with the
Technics design in the laser pickup. More specifically, it in the electronics.
The system needs to be adjusted every now and then during the first year. I
am not sure if they (Sunshine Audio) know what they are talking about. I just
got the unit back about 3 weeks ago and it started acting up last night. I may
go all the way to Denver and see what the people at Listen Up have to say.
BTW - I understand that Listen Up has a very good selection of audio equipment
and they prices are quite reasonable.
re: .5
I was afraid that the first time this happened it was something like
ESD or lines surges. I was not used to the low humidity in the Springs area
since I lived in the South all my live were the humidity never gets below 90%.
I have since installed a central humidifier system in my house to keep the
humidity between 40 and 60 % instead of 20%. I also installed surge
suppressers on all my electronic equipment in the house. So far the only
problem I have is with the Technics SLP-8. So I feel like I have eliminated
the possibility of ESD or line surges.
BTW - There are two other units (SLP-8's) with the same problems.

| As an aside, our SL-P2 is going on a year old and has been a real work horse.
We've used it quite often without a hitch. I don't know how its features
compare to the 8's but it looks like Technics may have gotten the bugs out
with the P1, 2 and 3. If it's not too much of a step down, you might talk
trade in.

| I think maybe your problem is with Sunshine Audio, because it sounds like they
are feeding you a line. I have never heard of a CD player that punts its
adjustments every 6 weeks! In fact it is hard to believe that any home
electronic equipment would do this. I strongly reccomend you call Listen Up on
DTN and ask their service department. If your friends are having similar
problems and they all go to Sunshine Audio, all of the SLP8s may be worked on
by the same (incompetant) person. My SL-P8 hasn't burped since it was new in
December 83. Technics has a 2 year warranty. I assume that the work on the
three units has been under warranty. (I hate to say it but maybe Sunshine
Audio is getting a few extra warranty bucks at your expense by having someone
not adjust SL-P8s properly.) BTW the SL-P3 is real nice. Maybe you should get
satisfaction by demanding one of those from Sunshine Audio.

| I am happy! I took my troublesome Technics to Listen Up in Denver as
suggested by GSCOTT. Even though it took three trips, Listen Up resolved my
problems by the middle of December. They had to replace the laser, the pickup
and the laser preamp. Most important, their service department is excellent.
They kept me informed at all times while the unit was in for repair. The only
'bad' issue was that I spent about $150 buying CDs in the three trips. They
had a great selection of classical CDs. When I am in Denver, I always make it
a point to go by and check out their selection of CDs.
I would return to Listen Up for any service or to purchase new equipment and I
highly recommend them to anyone. Thanks again for the advice.

173.10 | The warranty must have expired... | STKSMA::AHLGREN | My God, It's full of stars!! | Tue Feb 07 1989 14:34 | 14 |
| I've been having a SLP-8 for four years now with no problems until
last week.
I have problem with the 'search' facility. It seems like if the
laser head can't find the songs I ask it to play. It keeps looking
on the record but can't find the songs. It seems to have more problems
with some records than with others. If a play a record 'straight
through' I have no problem.
I have cleaned the lens but the problem is still there...
Is this gonna cost me plenty, or what?
Paul.
