172.0. "CALIFORNIA PROJECT" by TINCUP::PETRARCA () Fri Aug 30 1985 19:21

If you are looking for a Sub-woofer demo disk or are a member of the
Baby Boomers then you need to checkout this one -

Old Beach Boys songs - with pretty close arrangements done in the original
studio digitally recorded (by TELARC which means it is right) in 1985!

If your woofer can track the bass in "California Girl" you've got it made!

Any other died in the wool surfin music lovers out there??

As a matter of fact...have you had a chance to see the recently-released
Beach Boys documentary, An American Band? For a review check out

Yeap, several of my friends, and myself have that disc, and thou we aren't
hard core Beach Boy fans, we all like it as good (or probably better) than
the Beach Boy recordings. Again, hard to beat a well mastered DDD Telarc
disc with great songs on it ...

Is it actually called "Old Beach Boys songs"?

And is it on the Telarc label or someone elses with the mastering done by
them?

It is a TELARC disk, named "California Project". Released 1 June 1985,
mastered in the same studio that the Beach Boys used for many of their
sessions. Digital mastering was early 1985. Enjoy - Bruce

RE: .0

Did you buy "California Project" here in the Springs? If so where? I checked
Sound Warehouse this weekend and couldn't find it.

Aaaargh! I've been looking for this disk for over a month now.
Last weekend, Lechemere had a sale, and there was a picture of this
disk in the Beantown Glob advertized at $11.95. I zipped up to the
New Hampshire Mall Lechemere, and ran into their normally dissappointing
selection of disks. No "California Project"!

Since my wife is a died-in-wool surf music fan from L.A. (I think she
went to high school with one of the Wilson brothers), she decided to
be persistent and ask for a rain-check. The young gentleman who
assisted her was shocked at such a request and told her it would probably
take longer than the life of the known universe to get a copy of that
particular disk in stock. He finally knuckled under to the pressure
and started shuffling computer printouts in a meaningful way to do whatever
needed to be done to give us a rain check. At that point, he was unable
to find the disk listed in any of his lists, threw up his hands in despair
and disgust, and said he was unable to give us a rain check, because, as
far as he was concerned, the disk did not exist!

Help! Where can I find this disk in southern N.H. or the Marlboro, Mass.
area?

I think I'll stick to Strawberries from now on.

Check Rock'n Mania Route 9 Framingham. I was there a week or so ago, and
believe they had several of this disc.

City Hall Music on Main Street, Marlboro, had a copy the last time I was
there.

Rockit Records in Nashua had a new one on Wednesday night. I bought the used
one.

I bought a copy Tuesday night in Mall of NH Lechmere store. At that time
there were several copies in the pop section.

Good luck..

I thought the recording was good but not up to the quality/sound of other
TELARC CDs.

	"California Project" in Colorado Springs:

Try the Record Bar at the Citadel or Budget
		Tapes and Records on Tejon.

	In general:

The group performing "California Project" is a
Beach Boys sound-alike group called "Papa Do Run Run".
Whether they really sound like the original is still
a question up for grabs. Since I have only heard the
Beach Boys is passing I can only say that they sound
the way I would expect the Beach Boys to sound.

The only complaint I have against "California Project" is that
Telarc didn't use the same recording of "Good Vibrations" that
they used on the Omni Disk or the CD Sampler. The one on the
Sampler comes closer to the Omni Disk cut.

**BEACH BOYS FANS**

An album containing all new material is available from the Beach Boys. Titled
"The Beach Boys", the album sports 11 new songs, one of which was written
by and recorded with the assistance of Stevie Wonder. Pretty good album.

On Caribou/CBS in pure digital ("DDD") -- ZK39946

DON'T head to Strawberries at the Nashua Mall until after their next CD shipment
arrives (Wednesday evening, I believe) -- I bought the last one.
