171.0. "Bruno Walter on CD?" by CRVAX1::KAPLOW () Tue Aug 20 1985 19:11

My wife found a copy of the CBS/Sony Bruno Walter Beethoven 6th,
and now wants more. The jacket and notes are all in Japanese, and when
she inquired at a (large) local store, they said that only a few were
imported and she was lucky to get the one she has! Has anyone seen any
of these disks? She would be interested in any Bruno Walter recordings
of Beethoven, Mahler, or Mozart, besides the one she already has.

BTW, these are very old recordings that have been remastered for CD.
Considering the age of the recordings, they have done an EXCELENT job.

[Posted to CD.NOT and CDSWAP.NOT - sorry for the duplication if you read
both. Discussion of these disks is welcome in CD.NOT, please do not
respond to CDSWAP.NOT, but send mail to CRVAX1::KAPLOW if you know where
one of these disks might be had. I will gladly pay for the disk, and
whatever trouble it takes to get them.]

Looking through my catalogs, I find:

Mahler: Das Lied Von Der Erde/Vienna Philharmonic, Bruno Walter,
		Kathleen Ferrier, Julius Patzak
		London 414-194-2
Available from The Essentials Marketing, catalog number
		9117, $17.59

Essentials can be called at 800-525-2514. They charge $2.95 shipping
per order, and if you order 3 or more discs, you get 20% off.

Compact Disc Centre (1-800-232-3687) lists the Mahler at $14.99, catalog
number 2094. They also have the Beethoven's 6th, CBS MYK36720, catalog
number 3167, for $12.99. CDC charges $2.50 for the first shipment,
$1 for any additional shipments of backordered items (kinda encourages
them to ship them out one at a time, doesn't it...) I have not ordered
from CDC so I have no idea what their service is like or whether or not
their seemingly large catalog is "vaporware". They give $1/disc off if
you order 10 or more total.

I use CDC quite a bit and have found there service to be excellent. Very
few backorders and what they have they ship out immediately. You have
the option to control how the order is shipped - if there are backordered
items you could hold the entire shipment up, cancel the backorder or have
it shipped separately. For service have your order number available, they
can't help much with just a name.

I have myself two CDs from CBS/Sony with Bruno Walter, that is Beethoven
Symphony 4&5 and Symphony 9. I think I saw Beethoven Symphony 7&8.
I got the discs here in Nice, France at a shop called FNAC and I think
it cost between $14-16. If you should be interrested I would be glad
to check what CD they have with Buno Walter now. Please mail me at
BEAGLE::MULELID.

Unfortunately, they have now shown up in our area. My wife just came home
with a stack of disks, and a $110 visa bill!

Bruno seems to be getting popular now. I went to Strawberrys in Nashua
on Sunday to take advantage of their $12.99 sale. There were Bruno Walter
versions of many classical pieces. I picked up Brahms Double Concerto/
Schumann ???

The remastering IS very good. I turned up the volume on the quiet parts
to see what the background sounded like. Very little hiss.

Gee, some of the ones my wife bought have a LOT of hiss. But then I guess it's
all relative. Still they aren't bad for the '50s, and are much better than my
wifes old records that got watered along with her plants.
