166.0. "Toyomenka CD Player" by HBO::NEIL () Wed Aug 14 1985 15:18

Has anybody heard of a Japanese brand called "Toyomenka". If so
would one be worth $200 ? The ad says 'programmable' but details are
sketchy......

	Peter.

P.S. If I bought it would I have any trouble hooking it up to my B+O
2400 series ??

I am glad someone else asked this question first. The only place I have
seen one of these is on the "Electronic Store(?)" flyers I get from American
Express. I figure that it can't be worth $200 since everything else they
sell is vastly overpriced (items that can be had for $250 over the counter
AE sells for $300 or more - probably inludes the interest that they claim
you don't pay). I figured that I'd do better to try to get one of those
$200 Magnovox units that are mentioned in this file if I wanted to do it
cheap.

Are you sure its from Japan, it may be Korean?

 That's were it comes from...

The flyer says Japan. The only 'programming' capabilities it describes
I don't really understand:

	- "music search for high speed sampling of the music selections
	   on an entire disc"
	- "repeat memory for instant location of individual songs"

Toyomenka (aka TMK) is Japanese, but very low-end. I have never found
anything from those Amex flyers to be a bargain, though their price on the
KV25XBR is surprisingly reasonable. (Not so the SL-HF400 they're offering
at 50% higher than standard retail!) When you see that they are also
selling the D-5 for $300, you begin to get the picture. You can probably
find a reasonable Sanyo or even a Sony locally. Sony seems to have yet
another line of players at low prices (CDP-30 and CDP-70).

OK - so much for shopping at home from AMEX ......

Will go look at Magnavox, Sony, Sanyo types - thanks for the input ..

Just for your interest.

The name "TOYOMENKA" is definitely Japanese and it suggests that the
company is in textile business since the direct translation of the name
is:

	TOYO - MENKA
     Oriental Cotton !

Is this what you call diversification?

Maybe they play CDs with cotton rather than plastic backing. Can permanent
press CDs be far behind!?

Permanent press CDs are already here. I think that it's UN-permanent press
CDs (record as well as plat) that a lot of people are waiting for.

sorry, couldn't resist :-)
