165.0. "amp for a D-5 (in the car)" by HBO::WARREN () Tue Aug 13 1985 09:15

I am planning on buying a D-5 in the near future, mostly for home use.
Everyone has been raving about the thing in their car.......so i figure what
the heck, I'd like to use it my car (now that I have a car).

Question is, what type of amp will I need. I have decent speakers, but
a crappy realistic radio/tape dec.......I don't want to spend tons of money
here.......so what amp should I get to drive the thing.

Think cheap!!!

thanks

I don't know if this is the right answer, but it works:

There are a number of amp/equalizers on the market (I'm horrible
with numbers) for ~$150, probably much less. Sony has a few (I
have one of them).

The "problem" with the D5 is the line-out jack is not controlled
by the volume knob, hence you have to have some sort of pre-amp
between the D5 and the amp. I've temporarily resorted to driving
the amp from the headphone jack (it work, and if I'm careful I
shouldn't damage the amp by overdriving it...). Although the
Sony has lots of pretty lights, I have it buried deep in the
bowels of the car, so you can't tell it even exists.

If anyone knows where I can get a cheapo stereo preamp (9/12VDC)
with volume control (and 2 switchable inputs) I'd like to know
(kits are acceptable).

Currently, the only problem I have with it is the amp seems to
pick up the D5's motor noise, but this is pretty much irrelevant
considering all the traffic noise, etc. that is present too.

Maybe I have a sensitive unit, but my D5 isn't fond of bridges,
potholes, and moderate bumps when left to itself. If my wife
holds it in her lap, it runs like a top. I'm still devising ways
to shock mount it better... [Since I only use the D5 for long
trips, this isn't a very big priority in my life..]

If you find a good way to shock-mount the D-5 in the car, please post it.
I'd be interested.

The best way would be to float it in a bowl of mercury, but mercury isn't
easy to get in these environment-conscious times. :-)

	You can buy a cheap realistic amp/equalizer that will work and
their around $60.
	As for shock mounting has anyone tried to put a piece of foam
rubber, like the stuff the pack the Digital Hard disks, under the D-5,
or will this cause the D-5 to heat up, severely.

All you need to do mount the D-5 in a box within a box.

	==========================
	|  ^	^     ^     ^    |
	|  ^	^     ^ Springs  |Outer Box
	| |--------------------| |
	| |	D-5	       | |
	| |		       | |
	| |--------------------| |
	|  ^	^     ^     ^    |
	|  ^	^     ^     ^    |
	==========================

If you do it right, (Ie:take time to build it) it works well.
The heat problem is not too bad because I left holes where the power
supply inside the D-5 is positioned (front right).

HMMMMM...I guess my D5 must be defective, I have tried it both in the glove
compartment and on the front seat. Never a problem. The only time I have
ever had it skip is when it slides down the seat and bangs into the back
of the seat. When I first wired mine up, I put it on the seat, started it
playing and started beating on the seat. The D5 went for quite a ride but
never skiped.
