| There are quite a few Who recordings on CD. I have "Tommy" and
"Who's Next"; both sound very good given the recording era. I also
have a CD which is a collection of their singles, called "The Singles".
Quality of these cuts ranges from terrible to good. The "Summertime
Blues" cut has some annoying noise, which I thought to be a CD defect.
I returned the disc, but the replacement had the same problem. Bad
pressing master?
There are other Who CDs as well: Live at Leeds, Quadrophenia. There are
probably others.

| The old "Green Compact Disc Catalog" also lists "It's Hard". I've seen
"The Who By Numbers" in the store. There are quite a few Who discs out.

| I have "Tommy". It sounds a little better than the LP. It also came as a
2-disc set with each disc in a seperate "jewel box" rather than the stupid
double_disc_jewel_box.

THE SINGLES
IT'S HARD
WHO BY NUMBERS
WHO'S NEXT
QUADROPHENIA
TOMMY
LIVE AT LEEDS
I have WHO'S NEXT and QUADROPHENIA. Both of these are, of course, remasterings
from analog originals. Thus, they have some background hiss. The original
analog masters fortunately were of good quality, though, so the sound is
very clean. On WHO'S NEXT, you can even hear Keith Moon pick up his
drumsticks just before Daltrey's primal scream at the end of "Won't Get Fooled
Again."

162.7 | Live At Leeds | DECWET::THOMAS | A legend in his own lunchtime | Fri Jun 12 1987 21:01 | 8 |
| I have a copy of Live At Leeds. From memory of the LP, I'd say that
there is just as much distortion on the CD as on the LP. Presumably
the distortion was introduced at the time of recording.
What do you expect from a live recording (especially the Who) anyway?
Good music though.

| There are only two Who that I am waiting for: Happy Jack and
Sell Out. None of the others matter to me as much as these.
There is a double vinyl re-release of these. Why can't they
just double 'em up on one CD and end my torment?
Now that I mention it My Generation would be nice to have as well.

| re: Live at Leeds
I have an old copy of the LP and on the label there's a note
about the crackling noises that says they are not defects but
were just part of what happened during the performance.

Can someone who's bought a copy of "Who's Next" recently comment
on the hiss level? I have a copy I bought about 4 years ago and
it's one of the few discs I own out of 150+ where the hiss level
is high enough to really annoy me. The reason I ask about recent
copies is I just bought "Who's Missing", a collection of B sides and
outtakes, and many of the cuts dating from "Who's Next" or earlier
have less hiss than my disc. My "Who's Next" is on Polydor, and
I'm wondering if MCA used better sources when they mastered it,
seeing what a fine job they did with the Buddy Holly collection.
It appears that in some cases those of us who bought discs when
they were first released got burned because the companies didn't
bother searching out the best masters. I've read that "Disraeli Gears"
is going to reissued using lower generation masters, and I believe
the same thing is happening with the Doors.

I bought my copy of Who's Next a few months ago; I'm pretty sure that
it's MCA. I hardly play it at all. The hiss level is high, but not as
high as some other disks I have. The most annoying thing is the
compression of the dynamic range. On Baba O'R and Won't get fooled, the
bass is positively timid. I generaly prefer to listen to the vinyl
versions of the tunes, which are played fairly frequently on the radio.

162.12 | Greatest Hits | ISWISS::SALLOWAY | Suspicion breeds confidence | Tue Jan 12 1988 11:18 | 11 |
| Who's Greatest Hits contains 'Won't Get Fooled Again', and at least
one other cut (oops, I mean track) from Who's Next. The sound on these
is not good, but its better than some of the early songs on the
album. The only really good sounding song is 'Who are you'.
All in all, I'd say Who's Greatest Hits is one of the worst-sounding
CDs I have, although the performances, of course, are great.

162.13 | The Kids Are Alright | TOOK::MICHAUD | Jeff Michaud | Fri Feb 05 1988 22:14 | 13 |
| Just bought "The Kids Are Alright" on one (1) CD. In order
to fit it on one CD (71:05 minutes) they had to leave out
3 songs fron Reel Four, namely "Join Together", "RoadRunner",
and "My Generation Blues".
Too bad they left out "Join Together", it is one of my favorites.
I haven't had time to listen to it yet to comment on the
quality of the transference to CD, sorry.
While I'm on the subject, is that Tommy Smothers or the Smothers
Brothers introducing them at the beginning? I never saw the
movie (is the intro even from the movie?) to be sure.

Has Pete Townsend's _All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes_ been

| re:-1
Yeah, in the last few weeks I've seen:
Who's Better, Who's Best
Who's Last
Magic Bus
Who sings My Generation
A Quick One (Happy Jack)
Who Sell Out
I was not happy with the fact that the two-album sets that MCA released
on LP ended up as SINGLE CDs! These Albums are only about 30 minutes
long, they should put 2 per CD. I'd have bought them in that format,
but I refuse to pay $45+ for the four albums, esp. when the recordings
are so old.

| I'm listening to Who's Better, Who's Best right now. As far as
I'm concerned, it's absolutely unlistenable. Terrible. Hiss is
one thing, but this sounds muffled, garbled. The worst disc I've
ever heard.
So why am I still listening??

not the greatest recording in the world but the acoustic version
of Pinball Wizard just crackles with energy. That disc and White
