160.0. "Mission? Impossible!" by WHO::YERAZUNIS () Mon Aug 05 1985 11:57
I was recently the proud owner of a Mission DAD 7000 CD player. This lasted
nearly 18 hours. At the end of that time, I was so disgusted that I took it
back to the dealer and he returned my check. (I then bought another brand
of CD player, but that's not the subject here).
The Mission has a wonderfully full sound, beautiful bass response and
it even looks pretty up close. The drawer is solid-feeling and the remote
control works well.
But the tracking system is marginal and the error-correction is downright
disgraceful. One of my new CDs is Philip Glass' "The Photographer", and
although it would track, it would not play correctly. A long burst of noise
spoiled the second track.
Well, bad CD's happen. Try the Tchaikovsky 1812. No dice, this time it
goes on a random seek somewhere about 13'. In all, two of the first
six CD's would not play correctly, even with repeated washings and
(in the case of the Philip Glass) a gentle application of toothpaste
to a suspicous circular scratch.
Back to the dealer (Mom's Stereo Warehouse in Albany, NY) I went. They were
surprised to see me. I explained the problem (omitting mention of the use of
Crest in a way not supported by the American Dental Association). They
suggested I might have a bad player and should try another Mission.
We tried three. None of them could play either disk. However, ALL the
other CD players in the store we tried (a Carver, a NAD, a Sony and
a somethingorother) had no trouble on the Philip Glass and could be
navigated around the bad spot on the 1812.
Conclusion:
Mission does produce a wonderful *sounding* CD player. However
that player is not a *viable* player. I'd buy a mission only
if they redesigned their ECC to at least be as good as the
$300-on-sale players.
PS: I kept the Glass CD because (1) I like Glass and (2) I mucked it up,
it's mine, and (3) it works fine anyway and (4) it's a good work.
-Bill Yerazunis
PPS: Publishing this: go ahead, make my day.

| So so so, somebody who likes Phil Glass.....
"The Photographer" is his only (master)work that I have on CD. Would you by
chance have heard about any other Glass record on CD? I heard rumours about
"Satyagraha" (which I must have been listening about 10 times a week since I
bought it mid-July) and "Akhnaten" (which I seem to be the only one to have
heard rumours about, in other words I don't have any recording of this one).
I might consider paying up to <fill out blank space> dollars for a CD of
"Satyagraha" if it ever existed. I might even go out and put a contract on
the heads of a few Record Company directors, just to get it!

Thanks mucho mucho for the info. I already have Glassworks on 12" LP, but I
feel it's worth having on CD as well.
Would you be kind enough to give me the exact reference (order number) to help
me order it at my favorite record store.

| Re: 160.4
Many many thanks. I really do appreciate. Really.
Re: 160.5
"Be of good cheer", "be of good cheer", ..... (grumble grumble) ..... that's
easier said than done. Obviously you have not yet reached the level of
addiction that I have (don't envy me, it's terrible; one day without Glass and
I am nothing more than a human wreck rolling on the floor waiting for the next
shoot). Have you re-listened to Einstein On The Beach recently?
Well, I'm gonna try to wait for Mr./Ms. CBS to release a few more Masterworks.
