157.0. "Technics SL-P15" by EUCLID::PAULHUS () Thu Aug 01 1985 15:01

Is anyone else waiting for the Technics SL-P15 "jukebox". I've
had cash in hand and have been bugging my local dealer and J&R
(who have had it in their catalog since 11/84) since last November.
Digital Audio said something about not til this fall. Anybody
heard anything else? Anybody actually seen one of these at a show?
I'm one of the audio non-purists - I like great sound, but want
as few components and as little manual work as possible. I've never
owned a turntable, always a good changer; have a receiver, not a
tuner, eq. and amp., etc. My one vise is good bass speakers -
I have a Propper Sound set (Tom Horrall at bbn, and friends) with
a 3 dB down roll-off point at 32 Hz. My favorite bass CDs:
		Pat Benatar	Tropico We Belong
Copeland Fanfare for the Common Man
Vangelis	Theme from Ch. of Fire Longest selection
While waiting for the SL-P15, I've bought a Sony D5. Do they all
have a hunting noise while in pause?
Has anyone heard about a GE remote control system that allows
remote IR controller use in any location in the house?

From all the accounts I've read, the SL-P15 is still "vaporware".

My D5 makes a brief noise when pause is activated, but is otherwise
silent.

Yes, I've read reports of the GE "generic" IR controller. Sounds like
a great idea, but I'd want to see it in action first.

RE: Propper Sound speakers

What a surprise! Finding another Propper Sound owner on the EasyNet. I
understand that there are less than 50 of us in the whole wide world.

Tom's speakers certainly show the difference between low-low mid-range and
real BASS! It's amazing how many so-called hi-fi recordings have anemic
bass response.

Hi.

Most D-5's will make the "hunt" sound, as you call it, when in
PAUSE mode. THis is the head "jumping" from the end of a track
to the beggining of the same track. It is very normal and nothing
to worry about.

The reason why some people's make noise and others do not is the same reason
that some person's skip when hit on the side, and others do
not -- during midway into production the D-5 was given an isolator for
the head which minimizes much of the vibration. Unfortunately, this was
not made public and was handled much he same way the ESCORT radar
detectors are (ie: many changes but no announcements or change in style.)

Tell me more about these "Propper Sound" speakers. How much did they
cost? How big are they? How much power do they handle?

I also am a fan of heavy bass and loud music. I plan to buy new speakers
next year and want something really earth shattering. I have Cerwin Vega
pro-speakers now and was thinking of Klipshorns for replacements.

Re .3:
Maybe THAT's the significance of the "A" in my D-5A designation.

Re .4:
I'm sure that discussion can be handled via MAIL. I also recall seeing
something on it in the AUDIO notesfile a while ago.

RE: .4

See note #18 in the AUDIO notefile (SMILEY::SYS$NOTES:AUDIO.NOT) for a brief
(but expandible) discussion of the Propper Sound speaker system.
