153.0. "Peter Gabriel on CD" by SPRITE::KERR () Fri Jul 19 1985 11:07

Has anyone purchased Peter Gabriel on CD? I am what you could call a raving
fanatic of P.G., and I would LOVE to have CD's of his albums. Any comments on
the quality of reproduction? Price? Availability? ( I haven't seen any in
Providence, but I haven't looked really hard )

***************************************************************************

Also, could someone recommend a mail order company to check where I could buy
a Sony D5 at the cheapest price? I'm going back to Grinnell in a few weeks, and
I want a really small unit in the dorms.... Addresses and price range would
really be appreciated.

 Thanks in advance.

	Re: .-1

I know you said you were looking for a D5 via mail-order...
...but I just bought a D5 this week and figured
I'd throw in my 2 cents worth of local prices:

I did a little bit of calling around in the Southern NH area:

Comous (sp?) (Salem): 250.00 (299.00 for D5 deluxe)
	Leichmere (Manchester): 279.00
	Service Merchandise (Manchester):	227.00

I saw an ad in Sunday's Globe for Labelle in Biddeford, ME. I think they
wanted $199 for the D-5. I've heard they charge a lot for S+H but I've never
bought anything from them so I don't know. (They also wanted something like
$174.95 for a Sanyo unit that I wasn't impressed by, but I heard it as part
of a rack system of all Sanyo stuff, and two separate reviews, Stereo Review
and Consumer Reports basically said they couldn't hear any difference between
any of the players on the market today, Sanyo included. CU did rate the Sanyo
pretty low for not having many features or much convenience). Anyway, that's
the best I've seen lately. Player prices seem to be dropping, though.

As to the *other* subject of this note, I noticed a couple of Peter Gabriel
CD's Saturday at Rock'n'Mania (Route 9, Framingham). Sorry, I can't recall
the titles --- I'm not a Gabriel fan, myself.

I have the first Peter Gabriel CD, the cover just has his name on it in
the upper left hand corner . It is a fantastic sounding disk (excuse poor
grammar) . My collection runs about 65% classical, 20% Jazz and 15% Rock .

This Gabriel disk was an analog master I believe, but is so quiet I thought it
was Digital mastered . He uses a range of tones that you normally find only
in classical music . I remember this disk being rated in the top 10 in a
reader survey in Digital Audio .

Great listening .

Jon

As far as I know, there are 3 of Pete Gab's works available on CD. They are:

        * PG's 4th record (I believe it is marketed as "Security" in
the US); it was one of the very first CD's I bought (if not
THE first one). The sound is re-al-ly ve-ry good; you can
hear a few sounds in the high-end of the spectrum which you
wouldn't hear on the best conventional stereo (like higher
harmonics created by the envelope generator of the synth.).

        * the live LP, of which only excerpts are reproduced on the CD.
It's called something like "Highlights". Well, the sound is
ok, but I feel it's sort of a sting not to have put all songs
          on the CD.

        * "Birdy", which I have as an LP but not on CD. I'm not too
          enthusiastic about this one anyway.

P.S.: the day "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" is available on CD, I will buy
ten copies (just in case of nuclear war).

... and if you can't wait for Mr Gabriel to produce his next work, you might
consider his guest appearance on Laurie Anderson's "Mister Heartbreak".

He sings on one piece, and appears in at least one other. His influence
on the whole record is fairly perceivable (and Laurie Anderson is quite
    an interesting artist anyway).

... drifting still further away, I could go from Ms Anderson to Jean-Michel
Jarre: his latest record/CD, called "Zoolook" features Laurie A. singing
on one "song". The general ambience of the record is quite original, and
the sound is technically perfect. If you are into rythmic structures
(like on PG's "Security") you might like this record.

BTW, this last record, as well as all PG's records that I mentionned in my
previous response, are DDD (digital all the way through).
