151.0. "CD in Japanese Market" by GIGI::MAKOTO () Wed Jul 17 1985 13:50

I am leaving for Japan next Monday for a couple of weeks on vacation.
I was wondering what is the price range of CD's over there. So far,
I have seen a few Japanese labels at Lechmere and they were 3500 and
3800 yen, approximately $14 and $16. I was disappointed to see them
since I was expecting to see lower prices, knowing the popularity and
availability of CD's. Historically, albums have been always $2-4 more
expensive over there. I don't know if this is because of the better
packaging and higher quality of albums... Anyway, I am going to find out
about the Japanese CD market.

Does anybody has any information on Japanese Market?

I was in Tokyo in May and purchased many CDs; the selection is OUTSTANDING.
The average price that I paid was $13.50. The prices paid in Akihabura (sic)
are lower than department stores and record shops; and you can get a discount
(usually 10%). My average price of $13.50 is high because I did buy a few
discs in the Ginza. A good estimate for Akihabura would be $12.50, unless
the exchange rate has changed significantly (250 yen/$ in May).

That is a nice thing to hear. However, I don't plan to go to Tokyo ( just
transfer flight to my hometown, Sapporo). I understand that Akihabara
always run huge discounts and probably the best place to go but home
electronics and other things. Reading your reply, I got an impression that
I may not fine the price of CDs any cheaper unless I go to Akihabara.

Thanks anyway for the information.

I think that's about right. I just returned from Japan and paid about
Y3200. ($13.00).

There is a place called Yamagiwa that has great prices and an excllent
selection. You take the Yamanote-sen to Akihabara and then walk out the
entrance to the main street and make a left. Go to the next light
and cross the street. then cross the adjacent street. It looks like
this:

		|	|
		|	|
		|	|	YAMAGIWA
	--------	------------------------
		   ****************^
	-------- *	------------------------
		| *	|
		| *	|

		| *	|
---------------- *	|

I think you have to go up to the top floor to the CD section.
They also give discount coupons with each purchase -- So buy some then
go back later and use the coupons.

If I can be of any help regarding you trip, do not hesitate to call
or write back.

Thanks for the map. I'll be going to Tokyo myself in a couple of weeks.
I'll report back here if I find anything new and exciting.

No problem.

By the way, you might check out the following:

	TKOV60""::sys$notes:NIHONGO.NOT

Access is pretty slow and best done at afternoon (when it is early morning
in Tokyo.)

You might also go to the Ginza where they have alot of CD stores.

If you would like to rap (I would love to) about Tokyo and Japan,
give me a call and we could get together before you leave. I could
save you alot of aggrevation and time during traveling.

Mike

P.S. You either say First_name-san or Last_name-san , not both -- and
never when signing a letter. You only using it as a sign of respect
to others, not yourself.

Soredeha mata (See you later) Mike.
