| I've seen an announcement in a magazine early this year from p... philips.
Not much detail, just a quick picture of a musiccentre/gettoblaster type
of box. Price indication was 1500 dutch guilders = roughly $500.

| Sony has built their D-5 into a "boom box" - price was probably
near $500.

| Anything new on portable players? I'm going to buy one soon and
am curious as to which one I should buy, and why. Should I just
go an get a Sony D7?

| I've seen ads for a Toshiba model with a cute twist - when mounted
in its "at home" base, there's a plug-in IR receiver that lets you
control it remotely! Programmable and other stuff. No idea as
to price. If you want a player as a portable, I would choose the
D7.

| One thing I've noticed about the current crop of
portables (i.e. Sony D7 and Technics), is that they use a
non-standard ni-cad battery pack made up of non-standard (at
least to consumer availability) cels. This raised in my mind a
very important question. How and where can I get a pack to
replace the original when it fails in 2-5 years? More
importantly, how much will it cost??
This is especially important to those of you who will
either use the battery mode a lot (after all, this is a PORTABLE
player), or use it very little (reason for buying was other than
battery portability). These are the two conditions most
conducive to "early" battery failure (and I will guarantee that
it WILL fail!).
My "policy" on rechargeable battery devices has two
important aspects: 1. ready availability of replacement
batteries and/or cells. 2. capability of being used with regular
batteries (either alkaline or standard size ni-cads). Neither of
the newest available portables meet that criteria.
Possible solution (assuming you don't need the fancy
features of the newest units) is to buy the package that Service
Merchandise is currently selling. It consists of a Sony D5, Ac
adaptor (wall type), earphones, line out cable to attach to a
hi-fi, and a battery pack which holds 6 C cells of any type.
This is NOT the original wrap around battery pack Sony was
originally offering, but rather one which looks like the newer
ac adaptor onto which the D5 seats. The cost? about $220.

| I had understood that the D7 could use a battery pack that took
standard AA's, though the pack that comes with it is definitely
unique. As has been said before, the D-5 battery pack can use either
C-cells or the Sony NP-11 nicad battery that they use in Betamovies.

| It is also my understanding that the Sony D7 can use standard AA
cells when an optional battery holder is purchased.
As far as new portables is concerned, Sony has shown (only to its
largest customers) a version of the D7 which also includes an AM/FM
stereo receiver. This may be the ultimate "Walkman". I also
understand that Sony may announce it at their national sales meeting
the first week of April. I have a friend that works at Bose and
will be attending the meeting (Sony and Bose have many joint projects
in the works) and I will post a note if the thing is announced.
By the way, one of the joint projects between Sony and Bose is to
offer a version of Bose's Acoustic Wave Music System with a Sony
CD player in it instead of the cassette transport.

| I talked with the Acoustic Wave marketing manager at the Bose Christmas
party about a CD version (my wife is a systems analyist in Bose
IS). She was very insistant that there was no actual plan to market
a CD version during '86. Thats not to say there wasnt or they
wont be, just that Bose wont acknowlege - even between divisions
- that its in the works.
Sure would be nice though.

150.11 | Magnavox CD9510 portable | CRVAX1::KAPLOW | Bob Kaplow - DDO | Sat Mar 15 1986 00:26 | 8 |
| I thought I had mentioned this, but I noticed a portable CD player from
Magnavox in the latest Service Merchandise (spring) catalog. It seems
to have a feature or two that the D-5 doesn't. It lists for $229.95,
and SM sells it for 189.97. Given the reputation for Magnavox in
the inexpensive CD playermarket, it's worth checking this one out.
I haven't seen or heard it yet, so if anyone else knows first hand
about this one, please let me and the rest of us in on it.

I Bought one of the mag portables at S.M. It is on sale for $169
and some change. I'm real happy with it's performance and features.
The sale will be going on until some time in August.
BTW
I got it in Auburn, MA, and they only had 3 left.
