143.0. "DEC intros CD Computer System!" by ASGNQH::SMITH () Tue Jul 02 1985 06:43

This info is from New Hampshire View, Volume 6, Number 13, 1-JUL-85.

Digital is the first major computer maker to offer a fully integrated
system that utilizes optical technology to store vast amounts of data
on a single disc. The new Digital CD Reader system utilizes a compact
read-only optical disc that has a 600 megabyte capacity (the equivalent
of 200,000 single-spaced typewritten pages, or two complete sets of
encyclopedias) on a single disc less than five inches in diameter.
In addition to its hardware and software offerings, the company will
provide a CD ROM disc production service to assist customers in moving
data onto the compact discs. Digital also plans to license technology
to allow the same discs to be used on IBM PC's. The price? $2,195.00

I believe there is a CDROM notes file for this sort of stuff too.
I saw one of the players at DECUS. It uses the same Sony-Phillips
encoding scheme that audio CDs use. I wonder how a VAX would deal
with a Bruce Springsteen album?

GOLD""::SYS$NOTES:CDPERIPH.NOT is the Notes file, it has been getting more
active since the announcment of DEC's CDROM.

We have one of them here in Munich... looks very much like the first Philips
player (CD-100). In fact, I think the mechanics come from Philips.

P.S. What we need now, is just a D/A converter for the TU78 or another tape
drive... copy CDs from disk to tape and play them back in your home on the
TU78...

Re .4:
We've had one for years - the LPA-11K. I remember for the announcement
of VMS V2, Steve Beckhardt had an LPA-11 hooked up to a cassette deck,
and recorded "Also Sprach Zarasthrustra" (sp?) on a TE16 (TU77s weren't
out then, I don't think), and it was played back during the announcement.
According to Steve, people didn't quite realize that the VAX was playing
the music. I also note that the tape was moving at a good clip - there
was an AWFUL lot of data being recorded.

The Soundstream digital recorder used to record many of the digital
masters uses a PDP-11/45 with the LPA subsystem as its guts. I don't know
what it dumps its output to, but it must be BIG and FAST!

Just wait until DEC tries to get Soundstream to "upgrade" to an 11/730!
