142.0. "CDs for less than 10 bucks list" by FURILO::JOHNSON () Wed Jun 26 1985 08:54

Has anyone purchased any of Polygram's Popular Price Collection CDs?
Supposedly they are the first CDs to break the magic $10 barrier for list
price. Suggested LIST is $8.98. The stuff available on this collection
probably won't grab the main stream but the fact that they are leading
the way with this new price structure is good news .... now let's see if
its $8.98 list we could get it for $???? ...............

What kind of stuff is on them and where do you find them??

We could try guessing:

Slim Whitman's Greatest Hits
Mantovani plays Tunes from Beverly Hills Cop
Witty Saying by Gerald Ford (the silence of the CD is helpful here)

Actually, I think the Polygram one is the sampler in the D-5 player at
the Framingham Lechmere store used for demoing. They are all rather
current hits. Go to the headphone stereo section and give it a listen.

The cheap ones I have seen in Grammophone are just random Chopin this
and that, maybe a Tchaikovsky concerto. No blockbusters, that's for
sure.

Re: .3

The Lechemere in the Mall of NH uses Telarc Sampler I.

RE: 1

I suppose you can buy them from any place with a good selection. I have
not tried yet.

re: 2

You are not far off. I have seen some of the titles and they could be better.
Some stuff is old releases of big band and jazz.

I think the neat thing is the fact that they are consciously making an
attempt to mainstream the product with this new lower price.

I was in a record store this weekend (Recordsmith in Newington, NH) and they
had, scattered throughout their CD racks, CDs labelled "Popular Price
Collection" (not clear if it was by the store or the manufacturer), selling
for $9.95. I didn't see any I was particularly interested in, but they
didn't seem to be the real washouts you'd expect.

On the other end of the spectrum, I was in a Bradlees, which calls itself
a discount store, and nearly all their CDs (all two dozen or so) were
selling for $17.99! While this matches my normal impression of Bradlees,
I thought this just a bit outrageous.

Vox Records, which I haven't heard from in many years, has announced
their Vox Primo CD line listing for $9.98!

As I remember, Vox Records specialized in second (and third) line
performers in the usual repertoire (I've always wanted a version
of Beethoven's Fifth by the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra :-) ).

In addition to less expensive talent they will probably package
in cardboard "jewel" boxes or wallets.

I haven't yet seen them in stores, but they're advertised on radio.

See #688. These are available in the UK for just under 8, with
    real jewel boxes.
