Following is an excerpt from note (#74.2) by Frank Ries in the LASERDISC notes file: I was at the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago a couple weeks ago and in talking to Pioneer Video. ... Rumor has it the Pioneer will introduce a new rev of the CLD-900 [LV/CD player] around next January that will show still framevideo from CD discs. Record companies are thinking of using this for liner notes, words to songs, pictures of the artists etc. I wonder what this means for the future of CD players without video output? -- Ward

It doesn't say anything. Most current-generation CD players have subcode output that can be used for pictures; all you need is an outboard decoder. As there is not yet any standard for encoding non-music material on CDs, I'd doubt there will be any big push for this soon. Liner notes need not be done in video - they could just be alphanumeric text displayed on a small LCD or other display. Steve |
