135.0. "Bad in Batches" by ASGNQH::SMITH () Thu Jun 20 1985 06:40

I recently purchased a TELARC Sampler Volume 2 CD, and it had
a small blotch on it about 3mm in diameter that I couldn't
wipe off. Intermittently my CDP-302 had problems tracking in
that area. I took it back and exchanged it for another one,
and it had a similar (although somewhat smaller) blotch in the
same spot, that my player again had trouble tracking. Is it
possible that a great number of them will have a similar defect
because of a bad "Master Copy", or are CD's made in such a way
	that this could not happen?

If your "blotch" changed size from one disk to the next it probably wasn't
a defect in the master. Very often, either due to a bad batch of plastic
or plain carelessness of the process operator, you'll get a run or a sag
in the plastic coating on the disk. If it makes a bump, it will have different
optical properties than those planned for by the designers of the system
and it can cause a player to mistrack. This isn't necessarily a problem
with TELARC, but with the people who stamp the disks for them. (Although
you could argue that TELARC should have better quality control in their
acceptance procedures from the stamping vendor.) Try returning it for a
third copy.

My copy of the TELARC Sampler 2 is perfect.... They are probably made
by Polygram in West Germany.

I think most Telarcs are made in Japan. The japanese/US CDs have clear centers
while the West German ones have the shiny stuff all the way to the spindle hole

Get yourself another copy.

re. .2 & .3

All my Telarc CD's are made in Japan by Matsushita (parent of
Panasonic, Technics, et. al.)
