134.0. "CD Sources in Europe?" by GWEN::SPENCE () Mon Jun 17 1985 14:20

I am planning on a trip to Europ this fall and I would like to pick up
some CDs while I am there. The folowing is a list of cities that I am
considering for the trip. Any info on places to get CDs near these
cities would help.

London, Reims, Lyon, Montreux, Interlaken, Munich, Wurzburg, Amsterdam.

For Munich, try the following ones:

WOM (World of Music) in Kaufingerstrasse (pedestrian zone)
	- reasonable selection, some discs sell for DM 27,- otherwise
	  not especially inexpensive

Disco center (almost opposite to the new town hall [Glockenspiel!] at
Marienplatz
	- despite its name the best classical selection, 'standard' prices
(note that there are no 'list' prices in Germany as it is legally
	  forbidden).

Mediamarkt (Euro-Industriepark, you need a car to get there)
	- small selection but 'high volume' discs are usually a bit less
	  expensive

2001 in Tuerkenstrasse (Schwabing)
	- small selection but sometimes cheaper than others (all non-classical
	  discs are DM 29,90)

... and lots of others.

The prices haven't gone down here since quite some time now, the 'standars'
price for European discs is usually about 30-34 (non-classical) and >33 for
classical. Imports are very expensive (Japanese, Telarc etc.) usually over
45, up to DM 60 !!

In London, try

Harold Moore's Records, 2 Great Marlboro Street, London W1.
Open 7 days/week. Most European CD's (Decca, Philips)
are 9.95 pounds. Very large selection.

Music Discount Centre, 437 The Strand, London WC2.
also 29 Rathbone Place, London W1.
also 99 Dean Street, London W1
prices same as Moore's, sometimes less.

re: .2

Do you know if these companies do mail order?

Thanks/Dermot

They both do. Either send to the addresses given, or call them up.
(Harold Moore's at (1) 437-1576, MDC at (1) 637-0129). The Rathbone
Place address is MDC's mail-order office.

No postage for CD orders. (Moore's, minimum 14 pound sterling for free
CD postage). There is a postage charge for LPs.

They take the usual credit cards. These are good sources of DGG, Philips,
and Decca releases.

Can anyone suggest any places in the Netherlands, specifically in Amsterdam
or Arnhem?

Thanks

If you make it a little past Arnhem to Utrecht you might find some stores in
the Utrecht Centraal Station (there is a mall there called Hoog Catherine).
Also the neighborhood around there has many shops. Don't go there just for
CD's; you might find Utrecht interesting if you have free time, tho.

Thanks for the info. I shopped for CDs in about half a dozen places in the
Netherlands, London, and Nice. My general impression is that the European
stores carry a greater diversity of titles. For example, ballroom and latin
dance music is almost impossible to find here, but is available in abundance
in most European stores.

Also, I think primarily due to the strength of the U. S. dollar in recent
months, the prices are generally good.

One interesting observation is that most stores either displayed CDs in locked
cases, or displayed just the empty boxes, and provided the CD when you purchase
it. Most also allowed customers to listen to any CD before buying.

BTW, does anyone know if Harold Moore's is the same as HMV? I saw lots of
advertising for the latter, and none for the former, in Grammophone publications
I looked at.

HMV used to mean 'His Master's Voice' I think.
