I went out to buy a pair of running shoes on Saturday and returned without
shoes, but with a CD player !

We went into Technics in Harvard Sq just to ask a few questions and came out
with the Kenwood DP840 on a 7 day approval.

Having played it there is now no way that I would be without a CD player. I
had thought that my speakers were causing most of the distortion and overloading
in the old analog system and that I would get no benifit from a CD player
without replacing them. Whilst they could do with renewing, at first play of
the CD it became obvious that it had been the deck/cartridge/records causing
the grief. Now I am converted !

My question is - in the 7 day should I stick with the Kenwood or look for
a better system in the same price range ? ($300). The Coop is offering the
Toshiba XR-Z50 for $269. On the face of it, and going from a review in
Video & Sound this would appear to be a better purchase. Does anyone have any
experience with these or similar models. Also, my gut tells me that it is better
to purchase from a specialist audio store than a department store - any opinions
on that.

My apologies if all this has been covered in an earlier note - I am not going
to be able to read this file again until Thursday and need to make a decision
by Saturday.
