109.0. "Court and Spark - Joni Mitchell" by BAGELS::ROSENBAUM () Wed Apr 10 1985 23:45

Enough of this techical stuff. I think we may have lost all the "I don't
care how to equalize a laser; I listen to music" crowd.

Court and Spark	Joni Mitchell, 1974
---------------

The Music
Not too many albums feature Jose Feliciano and Cheech and Chong. Tom Scott
influenced. More pop than Ladies of the Canyon; more straight than Hejira.
Classic.

The CD
The purpose of this review was more to note a couple of points about
the CD rather than the music; anyone in the market for it probably has the LP.
I have heard two imperfections on many copies of the LP. I thought the CD
might be better.

The first is a bit of crackle pop of the beginning of cut 1. This is gone on
the CD. The second is the sound of mistracking during the multi-tracked vocal
at the beginning of Car on a Hill. Over the years this distortion has lessened
as I've been able to afford more expensive cartridges (tho' my $15 Grado
seems to track it the best). I thought the CD would be the end of it. Sorry,
no. Still there.

Other than that, very good quality considering it was made from a decade
old audio master.

I've often wondered about the beginning of "Car on a Hill" and often
though that my cartridge was at fault also and was dismayed when the
CD had the same problem. It's a relief to hear that its not my
equipment or my ears. I never find this recording boring even after
10 years and would recommend it to anyone who has the time to sit
down and listen to it.

On the same subject - I have a CD of U2's "War" album. There is an error at
the start of the last track (called "40") that I almost laughed at when I
first heard it - someone managed to get the sound of the tape winding up to
speed, and whatever is recorded there rushes by in half a second or so. I'm
surprised that it made it all the way to the CD...

By the way, are any of Mitchell's other albums available on CD yet?
I haven't seen any. I expect the new one will be on CD fairly soon.

That's why a lot of companies put the disclaimer about "limitations
of the source tape" on the box the CD comes in...I've seen this
    disclaimer on every Doors' CD.

I saw Clouds and Joni Mitchell in the store tonight. Maybe
Warner/Reprise, WEA or Warners, or whatever they call themselves
these days, is finally going to wake up and start releasing
stuff. I can only hope. I want BLUE! and Ladies of the Canyon.

COURT AND SPARK and DOG EAT DOG have both been available for quite a while, now.

Last month, a bunch of Joni's other albums were out on CD, including:

	HEJIRA
	MINGUS
	THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS
	MILES OF AISLES
	DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER
	FOR THE ROSES

Rockit Records here in Nashua had CLOUDS and JONI MITCHELL marked as being
available sometime next month. Looks like they're out now, from what you say.

BLUE and LADIES OF THE CANYON are out on CD now! I think this means that the
whole Joni Mitchell catalog is available on CD.
