Saint Saens Symphony #3 Telarc #cd80051 Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadephia Orchestra Michael Murray organist Like other Telarc discs this was also very clean as far as background noise. The music is very well done with no seeming stutters or slowness. The organ portion took be by surprised the first play through. I had the stereo down low ,but when Mr. Murray let loose the organ notes carried very well indeed. The dynamic range is very good. I would recommend this disk to people that like Saint Saens. Beethoven Symphony #9 Deutche Grammephon #410-987-2 Herbert Von Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic I've been waiting for this disc ever since I got my CD player. Although several noters have disliked Von Karajan I find he is the best when it comes to doing Beethoven's fifth or ninth symphonies. I have an old D.G. recording of Von Karajan doing the ninth symphony and the old and new sound much the same (except for scratchs) until the fourth movement. The original version that I have has different solo singers. The singer's on the cd version while good are not as great as the ones that did the old vinyl. Except for that the disk is rather good (the box indicates that it was digitally recorded and mastered). So if you like Von Karajan and Beethoven then this is a disc for you.

You CAN'T play Saint Saens low!!!! I don't have too many other discs I'd rather play on a Saturday afternoon when the neighbors are out! I just turn it up and let those 200 watts flow! Seriously though, I've had this particular recording ever since it first came out a few years ago. It, along with the 1812, was in the top 5 on my CD want list. If you're into "power" pieces, you can't miss this one! Ray

rep: .1 Gustav Holst's 'The Planets' is also a 'power' piece, and von Karajan has a decent digital recording of it on DG. Ken....

I have to admit that "The Planets" can rival almost anything... I'll have to pick up a copy of the one you mentioned. Thanks,

A really good "The Planets" is available on Chandos. I have the von Karajan on LP and wasn't impressed by the performance, although the audio quality was good. A. Rollow |
