63.0. "Madonna CD fully Digital" by CYGNUS::LAMBERT () Wed Dec 19 1984 18:31

I bought the Madonna "Like a Virgin" CD for my wife last week, and I
thought I would give a small review of it. This is a fine sounding CD,
although the material on it is somewhat popish, and shallow. The cleanliness
of the recording, and overall engineering is excellent.
On the label it says:

"Full Digital Recording"

And on the inside it said:

"Fanatically recorded digitally from start to finish on Sony
equipment"

Is this possibly the first fully digital recording in pop music to date? It is
the first I have seen anyway.

Brian -

Hey how'd you do that with the lettering. I have a VAXstation 1
and you should see the letters you have in the Quotes. They are really
nice looking. Kinda bold and gothic at the same time....

Both LP's from the former female singers from ABBA are digitally recorded.
These are: Frieda's Somethings Going On, and Agnetha's Wrap Your Arms
Around Me. Somethings Going On is not bad, some rather awsum drum and
bass arrangments, but I don't care much for Wrap Your Arms Around Me.

Another fully digital CD that I've bought recently is Wendy Carlos's
DIGITAL MOONSCAPES --- a *very* nice CD, probably the best of what I've
bought so far.

I'll leave it to you to decide what category she fits into. (DIGITAL AUDIO
lists her under "Classical")

Speaking of undefinable artists, has anyone seen CD's for Mannheim Steamroller
in the Boston area? The December DA (in the "Rock" section), lists FRESH AIRE's
I and II. Have the others been issued yet? Has anyone heard I and II yet? How
do they sound?

I always thought that Wendy (nee Walter) Carlos brought new meaning to
the concept of "synthesizer"... (Synthesized gender even.)

I picked up Fresh Aire I at Natural Sound in Framingham, they also had
Fresh Aire II. I believe the price was $18.9x and I have since
seen it for a lower price in some mail order catalog.

I classify Fresh Aire under "Jazz". Well, that section should probably
be called Jazz/Other. It includes straight Jazz, Windam Hill stuff
and various other things. At times I dispair of classifing music
and think of putting everything together, but dividing into Classical
Rock and Jazz works well for 80%. And the whole system works much
better than a classification system for books.

Oh, how does it sound? Well, I think it sounds great. But then,
I am not a golden ears and I never heard the Fresh Aire LP on a
good system.

Re: Mannheim Steamroller

In addition to those, there is a "Christmas"
album. I believe that the stereo store here in Chicago told me that it
was also available (and if not, I am sure that it will be available
soon) on CD. Being into Hannukah myself, I did not check it out. A
friend of ours from Denver turned us on to this group, and gave us 2 or
3 of their audio tapes. They seem to be better than the average tape,
and I can't see spending $18 each just to have the disk. Now if someone
wants to buy the tapes (as well as the 40 or so "audiophile" disks that
I have)....

I have Fresh Aire I on CD and number III on LP. I like the MUSIC
on III better. Note that all these were done with analog masters.

Fresh Aire V is now out in LP, and I think it was digitally mastered.
Haven't heard it, though.

I have my shelf in order by date of composition. Most things fit
in pretty well. I don't get too preceise - no better than 50 year
resolution, but my collection is only a couple hundred.

Can anyone tell me when the "Like a Virgin" CD was released in the US?

It only arrived in New Zealand a week ago and I'd be interested to
find out what sort of a time delay there is for CD's getting here.

By the way, typical prices for CD's here are NZ$30-40 which is about
US$15-20. Sounds OK if it weren't for the fact that the salaries here
are'nt in the same ratio as those in the US. However in spite of the
relatively greater cost CD demand is growing in NZ.

A guess-estimate is about two months ago (at least 5 weeks anyway)

since that is when I bought my copy -- The store that i purchased it from

Colorado actually got the CD before they got the LP.

By 'first', you mean the earliest-recorded one? Billy Joel's "The
Nylon Curtain (1982)" is fully digital, as is Paul McCartney's "Pipes
Of Peace (1983)". "Brothers In Arms" is 1985.

If I remember correctly, the first digital recording (pop or classical)
was Ry Cooder's 'Bop Til You Drop' LP. I don't remember exactly when it
was, but it was definitley earlier than those already mentioned.

'Born to Run' is definitely *not* digitally recorded.

Is there an other recording session?

While CD shopping last night, I came across the previously-mentioned
"Bop Till You Drop" by Ry Cooder. According to the note on the back,
it was the first completely digitally recorded rock album on a major
label. It was released in 1979.

Of course, this is only what Warner Bros. says. They also said (elsewhere)
that the Grateful Dead got together in 1967, 2 years too late.

Get real -- 'pop' isn't the world.

For example, I have a CD of the Boston Pops, recorded October 31st
and November 1st 1978, that is fully digital, and it makes
no claim to being the first digital recording.
