62.0. "Sony CDP-111" by LEBEEF::PATTERSON () Sun Dec 16 1984 12:35

I am a new reader to this notes file and also just purchased a Sony CDP-111
compact disc player. I bought the unit from Framingham Tweeter for $565 and
I negotiated a couple of free CDs to close the deal. This was their last unit
in stock, other than the demo. I did want to audition the Yamaha CD-2 that I'veread good things about, but I could not find a store in my area (Hudson, MA)
that has any units. I purchased the Sony CDP-111 because of a particular
feature called loop. The loop feature allows you to set two points (times) on
the CD into memory repeat for however long you desire. The time can be as
small as one second. My wife studies music and requires this feature when
analyzing music passages. It is easy to do with records and tape, but requires
a little more setup with a CD deck.

I played with the Revox and Nak at Natural Sound. I was impressed with the
craftmanship and feel of the units, but not to spend twice as much as the Sony.
I also could not hear any difference between the Revox and the Nak. I will be
the first to admit, though, that my ears are lined with lead, and not gold.

I visited the Electric Gramaphone in Sudbury. It is tough to find it you don't
know where it is. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful. I was not
pressured in any way to buy his products. I do think he is somewhat
opinionated, and his dogmatism could probably irk a few people. But what a
great selection of classical CDs.

I am very impressed with the Sony CDP-111. I am glad I found a unit I liked
at half the price of the Revox or the Nak. I am going to need the extra
money I saved to upgrade my speakers and electronics now that the CD player
puts them to shame.

What is a Sony CDP 111? Is this by chance a new model, or did you mean the
CDP-101?

Where exactly on RT. 20 is the Electric Gramaphone. I've have been lost trying
to find it. I know where Rt. 20 is, but I can't seem to locate the bloody
place. Any directions, Guvn'r??

Oh, Brian, I saw a CDP-111 at Sweeter (Tweeter) It is a new generation machine.
Has the double sampling thing of a sort. Quite a nice unit. I think it was
destined to replace the CDP-101. I've only seen it in brushed aluminum (my
favourite is black)

Supposedly, the Sony CDP-111 is the CDP-400, only in black. In fact, the
demo used the CDP-400's remote control, because they could not find the
CDP-111's remote unit. The salesman said that Tweeter had an "exclusive"
on the model, whatever that means.

Now, directions to Electric Gramaphone...

It is "behind" the shops at the stop light on Rt. 20 in Sudbury. The
place is on the third floor. I did not notice a sign on the Rt. 20
side. Around back, next to the Brookfield shoe store...the sign is up
at about the second story level. If you want to talk, visit at an off
time because the owner seems to be the only one there. I went back at
4:30 in the afternoon and the place was crowded...no time to chat, if
thats what you wan

Hope you find the place.

The name of the cluster of shops where Electric Grammophone is
	located is called "Mill Village".

Thanks J_McLeman. I was not aware of this model. I like the memory you
have, though.....

Just to clear up some misinformation about this model. It is a lower
cost replacement to the cdp-400 (which comes in silver only). The cdp-400
is the same as the more expensive 610-es which does come in black (at a
hefty premium). The cdp-111 is the cdp-400 with some minor cosmetic changes
on the front panel for the volume control. The headphone volume control is
now variable (as opposed to click stops on the 400) and they have added
a remote control jack on the back which is not present on the 400. Inside
the machines are identical both in mechanics and electronics. They use
the same remote as they are the same machine. The 111 can be had for easily
less than 500 in the right places. The 610, 400 and 111 all use the
same electronics which is analog filtering (not oversampling). Error
correction is very good and the unit has a nice set of features. The nicest
thing is the remote's ability to handle the volume control.

Well, I hope this clears up some mis-information. It's a nice machine
and for the price you can get it for I believe a good value.

Thanks for the info, Peter. The day after I bought the CDP-111 from Tweeter,
I saw Lechmere had it on sale for $499. Win some, lose some, I guess. I will
have to go home a read the spec sheet again tonight because I was sure I read
that the unit did 2X oversampling, but I wouldn't bet any money on it.

I would like to know what are some of the other "right places" where low
prices can be found.
