Where have you seen the sampler discs for $9?

| I have Copland's "Appalachian Spring", etc. on a Telarc CD - lovely sound!
Also, Moussorgsky "Pictures at an Exhibition" (have that on vinyl too -
we like to A/B the CD against the record for people who think they might
buy a CD player - really impressive!), and the 1812 Overture.
I think the "Danger - DIGITAL CANONS" is mostly hype, at least unless you
like your music very very loud - you really could blow your midranges
(anons are higher-pitched than you think), but your ears would go first.

| Does it really say "digital canons" or does it say "digital cannons"?
A nice pun, if true, although perhaps better applicable to something
other than 1812.

| I am not sure what the label says, but the 1812 seems to be more
of a problem to the woofers than to the midranges.
My housemate has played the TELARC 1812 at high volumes several times
(my CD, his Infinity 1.0 speakers) and the woofers are the part of
the speakers which start moving from side to side when the volume
gets to high instead of just in and out. Needless to say, he had his
hand on the volume control when trying this out and the volume was
reduced quickly when he saw this.

I hate to tell you this but I bought the same discs at
TWEETER in Nashua and paid after their preferred customer discount
$38 and change. I agree they are excellent recordings and worth
either price but I am happy I paid the lower.

Thanks.....by the way, what was the regular price of the
set, and do you know what Tweeter's normal price is for Telarc CD's,
and how is their selection?

When did you get them from Tweeter in Nashua? I called last week,
Nashua and Manchester, and neither had them, do they have some in now?
[re .11]
Tweeter's price on Telarcs is $16.96, they have one of the better
selections of Telars that I've seen. They carry a few other labels,
Sheffield Labs, etc. Not a big selection by any means, but good...

Their regular price for the set was $45 and individual Telarc
are $20. However, if you ask for the discount of 15% you will probably
get it (16.99/single). I only recently have started to buy CDs and don't
know if these are good or bad prices. Compared to Lechmere and Strawberrys
these prices are competitive. Tweeter only carries Telarc, Denos??, and
one other which I can't remember.
Good luck!

| I bought the Telarc sampler #1 for 9.00 at the electric gramaphone in Sudbury.
I do not own a CD player yet (sob) but I bought it as a music source to bring
around with me while I choose new stereo equipment. It will probably the the
best 9.00 I have ever spent.

| I was at Tweeter in Shrewsbury on Thursday and they had quite a large
selection of at least 30-40 Telarc discs.
Steve
Since I don't own a CD player (yet!) I didn't ask the price.

Try Harold Moores in UK. I was there two weeks ago
and they sold the set for 33 pounds. And they ship
it free of charges. Well worth the price.

The Digital Cannons:
To really appreciate what the Telarc 1812 CD can do
to your speakers, find a copy of the records and look
towards the end of the 1812. You will see a 'jag' in
the groove. This is the beginning of the last cannon
blast. Some of the reverberations of that blast go
down to 6 Hz.
Some speakers will probably never come close to reproducing
that particular vibration. Which might be fortunate for
the speaker. What is mostly likely to happen is that the
power required to reproduce that frequency will force you
many watt amplifer into its distortion range. When that
distortion hits the speaker at that volumn....
Oh, by the way... If you are still into good turntables,
the 'Jag' at the end of the Telarc 1812 is a good test of
a turntables tracking ability. I know mine can handle it...

| Re: .18
I just picked up the Telarc Omni Disc. That has the 1812 cannon shots repeated
4 times. Each time 2db louder than the previous sections. That's really
a good test of your turntable, amp and speakers. My system handled it
perfectly. Frankly I'm both pleased and pleasantly surprised that my old
college receiver could handle it.

| My current turntable and cartridge (Mitsubishi? LT-5, Ortofon
LM30) is good enough to track it. My old set ($50 BSR crapola) was so
bad that it too would track it, as only a >7 earthquake would be
noticed! It sounded like %$&^*%& thou. It IS a good way to blow your
speakers thou. Keep the volume turned way down on this baby, or plan on
replacing your speakers afterwards.
