57.0. "How do I plug a CD into my PRO?" by BAGELS::ROSENBAUM () Sat Dec 08 1984 22:00

I went to DECWorld at the Hynes today and saw a CD and a Magnavox player there.
I didn't have enough time to find out what it was connected to or demonstating.
Anybody know?

If you saw a video disk player plugged into a Pro, it was probably
IVIS (primarily used for, but not limited to, Computer-Aided Instruction).
A VERY flashy piece of equipment.

I'm not aware of any efforts to use CD's as storage devices for Pro's, at
least not in the near future. Maybe IVIS was just using it for audio
courses ("Learn to speak French like your Pro").

For more information on CD's as storage devices send mail to GRAFIX::FEINBERG
(or is it IE)...

Steve

I think there is a notes file discussing this but I finally took it out of
my NOTEBOOK directory after several months of inactivity.

(some clarification)

The title of this note is misleading.. the CD disk and player was
not near a PRO nor was it an IVIS disk. It WAS next to a 12" video
disk labeled something like "VAX-11/730 update." I suppose it was
also an advanced development updating medium.

The purpose of the display was to show the various capacities of
media, with the optical discs being at the high end. The laservision
big optical discs are not storing digital, but rather analog video
signals today. Anyone know if the big optical discs are going digital
in the near future? The Compact Disc has a CDROM format specified
for the storage of computer rather than audio data. There is some
discussion of this in GOLD::SYS$NOTES:CDPERIPH. The December issue
of Digital Audio also goes into some detail on the CDROM format.

I don't believe the Magnavox player was connected to any computer,
but my understanding is that it is made by Phillips and is capable
of being connected to a computer.

Take a look at this month's copy of the DEC Professional. There is a large
article talking about the 12" disks and their use as a backup medium.

By the way, I interpreted "VAX 11/730 Update" as being an IVIS disc
containing a Field Service tutorial on the 11/730 hardware.

I think a CD would make a great distribution media for software. I suspect
that all of VMS would fit on one.

BTW, my Sony CDP-400 has an "accessory" connector on the rear. No explanation
in the manual.

A rumor heard at a local tv/radio/hi-fi store........

The new Sony CD-5 (the portable one) is rumored to have a computer
interface coming. The concept seems to be the CD as a large ROM.

I know some people at DEC have been looking at this technique, but I
don't know what the status is.

re: .7

All of VMS, all of the LP's., and all of the documentation...

(so the rumor goes)

CDPeriph.NOT is the place for this...
