| When the Sears in Searstown Mall in Leomenster, MA got CD players early
this year they also got some CDs. They priced them at $20 and $22 and
the price stayed there for months. They were selling *Rumors* for $22
when everyone else was selling it for $16 or lower. Recently they have
made great improvements -- disks are $16 to $19 and they had a sale
on some of the $16 disks last weekend. However, this still left them
more expensive than Strawberries in the same mall and they only have
disks which are very common.
I have never bought a CD at Sears and don't expect to do so.

| Cuomo's in Salem, NH has an ever-growing CD department. I went there
last night in response to their radio ad. The CD rack was quite a
bit bigger than the ones I have seen at Strawberries, and there was
a sign over it saying "Coming soon: much more".
Prices were mostly $15 for classical, $14 for rock. Telarc was $18.
They had some Sheffields too, also London, etc. Quite a wide
selection, but I didn't notice any folk music. (Unless you count
Kiri Te Kanawa singing English folk ballads, which I considered
getting, but decided not to.)

| This is a follow on to [.1], sources in Southern New Hampshire..
Another place, (mentioned elsewhere in this notes file), is Fayads
on route 101A in Amherst (opposite the Dexter outlet). They only had
a few disks when I was in there, I was given a list of WEA disks that
could be ordered.. WEA = Warner/Elektra/Atlantic Corporation.
I was not impressed..
Update: Both Lechmere and Record Town at the Mall of New Hampshire now
have Telarc disks.. Record Town is cheaper at $15.99, Lechmere
has them at $16.99. Both had several titles in stock.

| For those in the Mass, NH area who haven't heard...
Lechmere have CDs on sale for 25% off!! Which puts your $16.99 Telarc
at $12.74.
Sale ends 23rd. of this month..
I was up at the Mall of New Hampshire this afternoon and it was like a
zoo, you had to wait in line to get at the classical section.

For those of us west of the Hudson River...
Rose Records - Downtown Chicago. Real downtown...
Its under the elevated. I don't remember
the street address though. At the time I was
there (Spring '84) they had a good all around
selection.
Sound Warehouse - N. May Ave., Oklahoma City Ok.
Very good classical selection. The other
is pretty good.
Music Disc - Hamden off I-25 in Denver CO. Not
more than a block or so on the east side
of the Interstate. (Might be Hampden...)
Pretty good selection until you notice the
import wall. REAL imports. I found a copy
of Mobile Fidelity's Woodstock there.
Budget Records and Tapes - Various places around
this part of the world (Mountain time zone).
The one I frequent is here in Colorado Springs
on N. Tehon. Not a big selection but they
often have something new.
Video Concepts - Everywhere probably... Small selection
but usually worth looking into. (once a month or
so.)
Record Bar, Hasting's, World Records and tapes...
Usually not bad, but usually not very good
either.
Audio Inovations - Colorado Springs, North of the Citadel
Mall. No more than two dozen, but they tend to
be Telarc, Sheffield Labs, Mobile Fidelity, etc.
McKinsie-White Bookstores - Colorado Springs, Academy
Blvd. Almost all classical. It looks like they
got a bunch of CD's when they were $20+ and didn't
order anything new because they didn't sell. The
prices are slowly going down.
Gramaphone - Norman Okla., Campus Corner area. Denon,
Delos, Sheffield Labs and some of the "mass"
labels.
I suspect there is a really good place in Tulsa. There's
a record store there that specializes in Good recordings.
I've never been there, and only know about though a friend,
but suspect they would be selling CD's now.
Anybody from the west coast have anything to add...

| If you can call it living. There's so little oxygen in the air in
C. Springs that the emissions from the pine trees make some pockets
of the mountains uninhabitable.

| Another Good place to try (in the MDT timezone) is listenup in Denver
a couple of miles off of the Almeada I25 exit.

| Rose Records in Chicago is on South Wabash St. - its been there for ages.
However, if you're in the Chicago vicinity I would recommend going to Record
City in Skokie. The size of the store does not compare to Rose (but then
again what can when you span 3 large floors?) however the Pop/Rock and Jazz
selections are excellent w/ very competitive prices. Also, they have one of
the finest LP cutout sections I've ever seen - some real gems for $1.99-$4.99.
I might add that most of the sterio retailers in Chicago discount heavy - that
is if you don't mind bartering w/ them. I wish I could say the same for
Atlanta stores however, this just isn't the case.

| Re: .11
I've found that dickering is a an aquired skill. Most places will dicker
if you can get ahold of the manager/owner and don't just come in off the
street. Chains in particular don't dicker well since they have set prices,
minimum profit margins, and percentage kick backs to the chain.
Another thing to look for is a store that's been recommended by others.
When you go in to talk to the salesman mention that you were refered to them
by a friend who was a satisfied customer.
WARNING: Don't do this unless it's true. Most small stores
and even a number of large ones remember their
customers. When I was in Natural Sound, the salesman
I dealt with remembered a customer by name that hadn't
been there in over 3 years.
Also after you strike a deal be prepared to pay either by cash or check.
Credit cards will ruin any hopes of getting the best price since they
cost the store money.
Steve
One last point. When you go to dicker don't bring a friend and try to go
when the store is empty (monday afternoons are good). This little tidbit
is very valuable. Think about it for a momment. If you were the salesman
that was giving a discount, would you want everyone in the store to get the
idea that you will give discounts to everyone. Remember most audio/video
salesmen are on commision and discounts lower their income.

| So what if no one has entered anything in this note in 8 months, right??
Still haven't seen anything West of Colorado mentioned. In Sunny Cal
(specifically Northern), there's the TOWER record chain. There's the biggie
in Hollywierd (as featured in "BODY DOUBLE") and a large one carrying beacoups
collector stuff on Lombard in San Francisco. There's two in the general San
Jose area - S. Bascom Ave across from the Pruneyard and San Antonio rd/El
Camino Real on the Mt. View/Palo Alto/Los Altos borders. The latter just
had a terrific sale - storewide clearance, i.e., all cd's from retail 12.99
through 14.98 for 11.99 / retail 14.99 through 15.98 for 12.99 / multiple
disc set for 11.99 per disc. Other chains locally are Record Factory,
Wherehouse, Rainbow Records, etc. All found everywhere in the state. The
local record shop/discount house is fairly non-existant out here, with just
a few 2nd hand shops. Most of the chains are into it all: Record/cd/video
sales/rentals, etc. Al - Santa Clara
