50.0. "ELP, B3's and Moogs" by JACOB::J_MCLEMAN () Tue Nov 27 1984 01:40

Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Or as we all new them as ELP. Keith Emerson,
when he was with the Nce in '68, used to take classical music and interpet
it his way. He had alot of critical aclaim on doing this, but it's nice
to know it could be done and still leave the music piece intact.

Pictures at an Exibition.. ELP.. on compact disc. If anyone has the album,
you will not the opening pipe organ lines distort and sound muffled.
Listen to the CD! The pipe organ sounds like one! The recording has noticable
hiss, but clarity on music is amazing. The synthesizers attack you where you
sit. Oh how I miss the old Moog console, but this brings back fond memories
of my younger years. The CD even allows you to hear the Hammond B3 percussion
key click. Greg Lake's solo guitar work is clean, with sqeeky fret changes
for a change. Truly a CD to buy to preserve a classic cult work. Oh, if
you have a good bottom end, turn up the opening pipe organ, it'll leave an
impression. The original recording was in 1970 and it was digitized
6 mos. ago.

The new ELP (Emerson, Lake, and Powell) is out on CD now. I picked up a copy
yesterday at BCD in Harvard Square.

BRAIN SALAD SURGERY is now out on cd! No substantial increase in
sound quality from the LP, but that's not that big a point with
me. And I've heard a rumor from someone on Usenet that WORKS V.1
is alos on cd, but I haven't seen it yet.

Perhaps this is a harbinger of the eventual release on ELP's entire
    catalog. I hope so.

ELP has been out for a week or so, TRILOGY just came out.
I got both at BCD (I got the last TRILOGY they had out,
though). Since they are both domestic, I would guess that
    you could get them anywhere.

Are they dragging out the release of TARKUS just to frustrate
    us?

Also, KEITH EMERSON WITH THE NICE (a compilation of the two
Nice albums FIVE BRIDGES and ELEGY, minus a couple of tracks)
    is out.

Jerry, How does trilogy sound? I realize it is an old recording
but still would like to know how it sounds before I buy it anyway.8

My own opinion: you haven't really heard TRILOGY until you've heard it on CD.
Excellent.

What about the new album by Emerson Lake & Powell?? Does it sound
as good as the old stuff, or is it poppified. Also, how good a
job have they done on the CD, or is it originally digitally mastered???

The Emerson, Lake, and Powell album is pretty good. It's no Brain
Salad Surgery, but it's pretty good. Nice cover of The Planets,
despite the (over)use, IMHO, of electronic drums.

The CD was AAD, but it's nice and clean, as far as these ears can
tell. There's what sounds like distortion at the beginning of the
first track, but given Emerson's propensities for odd effects it
    might well be intentional.

If you like Keith Emerson's work, I'd suggest bagging the CD "Keith
Emerson with The Nice." The recording is old, and many of the tracks
are live, but it's an excellent CD.

As far as I know there is no longer an ELP. I read an article
in a local magazine that a guy from San Jose, CA will be joining
Emerson and Palmer in a new group called "Three". The third member
is a man by the name of Robert Berry.
