Of course we're still reading this file ... it's not dead and neither is CD

Right! As you can see it is read all over the globe.

Just to add to that, CD is getting quite common here in
Switzerland. Many people I know, have a player.
As I am considering buying one, this is a good file to
consult. I guess that CD records are more readily available
here than in the US. E.g. you can buy them in the larger stores
of the local supermarket chain (Migros)

Another reader!

What we need are some enterers (is that a word??)!!!

Someone asked this same question a few months ago. That spurred
people into entering notes and the file was quite active for a
while. I hope this happens again -- the file has been slow recently.

I have just been buying CDs slowly, at the rate of two or more a
week. I am a little dissapointed that the price drop seems to have
halted with CDs costing about $15.00 in stores and a dollar or two
less by mail order.

If you think *this* file hasn't been getting much action, try reading
LASERDISC.NOT --- it hasn't been active at all for the last three weeks!

I haven't been putting anything into this NOTES file for a while because I
moved (note the new address). However, I do plan to start checking this
file again on a bidiurnal basis...

If you think this place is dead you should check out CD's as a
computer peripheral ( gold::sys$notes:cdperiph). That hasn't seen
action since June.

Re: .5

Well, I like to listen to Rock, Jazz, Folk, Classical and many minor
and/or weird forms of music. I didn't buy a stereo for quite a
while because I could not afford to buy enough of a variety of music.
Then I was waiting for digital players to come out.

I now have a large backlog of music I would like to buy (several
hundred years of classical music). At the rate of 2 disks a week
it will take a decade to get the library I would like to have now.

I can't really afford to buy more, and I am somewhat limited by
availability, but I do consider 2 CDs a week to be slow buying.

<unpaid SHELF testimonial follows>

After many months (maybe years by now) of reading and writing notes, I've
noticed that when the update rate drops below a threshold, it seems to go
immediately to zero. I suspect that this is due to the frustration of taking
the time and trouble to visit a notes file, only to discover that there are
"no new notes". I personally find this to be VERY annoying.

I suspect that if everyone used SHELF to access notes file, we'd see more
activity on files such as these. Since SHELF tells me whenever a note file
I care about has been updated, I don't waste my time visiting files which
haven't changed.

Ward

P.S. Please add a new note to the LASERDISC notes file (on RSTS32::).
Those of us with LV players feel even more forgotten than you
      CD folks.

Well, I don't use SHELF, because I use NOTES11, which has the same feature
of letting you know if a file's been updated.

Personally, I don't contribute to this file because I don't have a CD player
yet. I'm just interested in the medium and in what others have to say about
them. So for now, this is really just a read-only file for me.

P.S. Same with LASERDISC.

I use the NOTES-11 UPDATE feature via a batch job every morning early.
Mostly this has been read only for me also while I decided which CD player
to get. Now I have one.

Thi is a GREAT source of info on CDs. I'm not an audiophile, but browse
thru here to read the audiophile comments on CD technology, add a comment
here & there, and try to find sources of inexpensive CDs. I have a Fisher
AD-850 CD, sold as part of an integrated stereo. Probably not the best, but
I sure like the sounds it produces.
