37.0. "Walkman-type CD" by TKOV60::KOBAYASHI () Wed Oct 17 1984 21:42

SONNY Japan announced "WALKMAN type" CD player. The body size is
a little bigger than CD itself. It works with 6 AA type batteries.
And it also has a output terminal for an amplifyer. Price is about
$200. Any announcement in U.S ?

As far as I know, there's been no official announcement here. I heard last
week that the official word was going to come sometime in the spring here
(probably February or so), but if it's ready they'll probably announce it for
Christmas.

I haven't heard anything, the last I read was that Sony announced a
CD player for Autos. That was back in July. (The Auto version was supposed
to be available end of Aug)
37.3KIRK::P_BECKWed Oct 17 1984 20:525
Stereo Review is predicting the player will be in stores by Christmas.
It's 1.5 pounds, 5 inches square by 1.5 inches deep, will sell for
about $300 here, and will have the same sound quality as full size
players (so they say). Question is, will it comes with a remote control
unit that you can point at your belt...

I think I can buy Sony's portable CD next month in Japan. I would like
to report you the performance of it.

By the way, I think the biggest problem for CD users is the lack of
"softwares". Right ? And I hope Sony's portable CD will be a trigger
for software makers to produce more softwares.

As you are the first from Japan in this file,
could you post a note here with the prices of
	CD-disks in Japan???

 RE: .-6

The price of Portable CD in Japan is almost Y50,000 (50,000 Yen).
And it is about $208. But in discount shops (in Akihabara/Tokyo),
we can but it by Y40,000. (= $170).

And I believe another electronics makers chase Sony, so, price
will become cheaper and cheaper.

 RE: -1

 Good question, Peter.

CD is about $20. (and regular one is about $10.) That's the biggest
problem for CD users...

 p.s. I think I found ">>>Peter" in WHOAREYOU.NOT. Did you write
       any note there ?

No i havent done it yet. I'm still trying to find
anything to say :-). Thanks anyway for the reply,
seem that the US and Japan has the bad end in
	regard to the prices...

I was talking to one of the guys in my group who is over in Japan doing some
things for us, and he visited Sony and got a demo on the unit. It won't be
available till spring in the U.S. There is a seperate battery pack to power
it, he said, batteries won't be internal. He says it sounds great, though,
if you are really into CD, then it is worth having.

I saw it yesterday on the CBS morning news show. It's called
the "Sony DISCMAN" and retails for US$300. You can carry it
around or connect it to your home stereo system. Sony also
makes one for the car. They should hit the market this month.

U.S. to support DEC World and to do other several jobs !

I think I must stay in U.S. at least 3 months. So, I want to buy
DISCMAN in U.S. Does any noter know where and when I can buy it around

I saw the DISCMAN at Tweeter, etc., in the Burlington Mall last
week. What an amazing little device. Tweeter wanted $300 for one
and was taking orders for delivery at the end of November. That
help Tohru?

Jordan Marsh at Shoppers world in Framingham had some of the Sony "Discman's".
(Sony doesn't call it that here - It's a portable compact disc player, or
something like that.) The price was 299.? and they had them in stock. They
weren't emphasizing the item, so the stock might just go slowly.

I also saw it at Jordan's at the Bedford NH Mall. $300. They're apparently
in stock, will plug into your stero just like a component.
