It is published by Wayne Green. However, he just publishes and
seems to keep his hands out of the magazine (Yea!!). It does
appear to be one of the better audio rags out.
(In case you didn't notice, I don't like most of Mr. Green's other
publications.)

| When I heard Peterboro, I was suspicious... I don't care for Mr. Green's
publications in general either...
BUT, people here seem to think well of it (so far) so maybe I'll pick up a
copy. Anybody know who else sells it? The folks in 73-land usually push thru
magazine stores -- anybody seen it?

| It is really called "Digital Review"???? There is already a magazine
with that name, published by Zipf-Davis, about the products of our
favorite computer company.

| I have an issue of "Digital Audio," and it is quite good.
But I ask you, why the antipathy toward Mr. Green's other mags?
I don't read 'em; I'm just curious why Mr. Green is so unpopular.

| If you'd ever met Wayne, or worse still, worked for him (as I have),
you'd understand why he is unpopular. Digital Audio is probably
one of his better mags - "73" is very good - but the rest tend to
be written by amateurs. It has been a long time (8 years) since
I worked for Wayne, and perhaps he has mellowed since then, but
he can be very difficult to put up with at times.

| Digital Audio is good? The one copy I ever read seemed to be
an excuse for running ads. It seemed as if all of the articles
were puff pieces for the equipment and disks.

| I never said DA was good - only that it was better than his other
stuff. Actually, DA does have some useful info, and informative
articles on what is going on in the world of CDs. I ignore the
disc reviews, since they're all so subjective. The equipment reviews
aren't too bad either, and often do criticize components.

| re: .8
Yup, DA was particularly bad at the start but it has improved as
the industry has matured. This conference is a much better source
of info but DA will do in a pinch. I enjoy seeing what's coming
up in the way of players and discs. .9 is right about the CD reviews.
Most of them suck the paper they're printed on. The lists of available
discs that Wayne provides, though not complete, are useful. And,
though I admit that I haven't worked for him, I like his style.
I like ass kickers. (That is ass *kickers*, the ass *kissers* live
at Stereo Review. :^)

| Re: .10
Perhaps not relevant to Digital Audio, but Wayne has a habit of
"kicking ass" when in fact it's his own ass that deserves to be
kicked. He loves to rake companies over the coals in his magazines
for problems he has had when it has been his own fault that he had
the problems. My case in point was the frequent tirades against
Prime Computer in Kilobaud - Wayne had a Prime 300 (which I was
programming for him). Yes, the machine was unreliable. You would
be too if you were put in an attic room without air conditioning
and with open windows with no screens - the temperature frequently
reached 90 in there and we pulled mosquitos out of the disk drives.
So the next time you see Wayne complain about a personal indignity,
consider that he may have brought it on himself.

| Hmm, interesting comment on reliability standards: I had a DEC
VT180 'Robin' PC a while back, in exactly the same environment
(not of my own choice). Never a 'bug' 8-) 8-) 8-)
Kinda chokes ya up, doesn't it? 8-) 8-) 8-)

| I have looked and looked in Nashua, but I have yet to see an issue of
Digital Audio. Maybe it was hidden behind the bodybuilders in one
place and the cars in the others, but I couldn't see it. Anyone
who can recommend a stand that carries it regularly (first choice Nashua,
Littleton for my lunch hour)?

32.15 | The "contract"... | COOKIE::ROLLOW | Redneck cooking... Fryit! | Sun Sep 28 1986 12:55 | 15 |
| I noticed the following at the bottom of credit page. It is copied
without permission of the publisher.
"Contract: The acquisition of this magzine is hereby declared a
legally binding contract between you, the purchaser, and the
publisher of "Digital Audio". This inlcudes subscribing, buying
it from a record or hi-fi store, buying it from a newsstand, or
"borrowing" it from a friend. As a contractee you directed to
immediately send "Digital Audio" gift subscriptions for all your
friends who have CD players. If you're too cheap to make even
this small gesture of friendship, then send your friends' names
and addresses to Digital Audio so the publisher (contractor) can
get them to pay instead. Know that they'll be reminded of your
cheapness."

32.16 | Green Catalog & sound/perf ratings | PARSEC::PESENTI | | Fri Oct 10 1986 11:18 | 14 |
| I've noticed copies in a few Walden books. Bought one, and haven't seen
another one in a while.
The same guy publishes the Green Catalog, advertised in DA. It's supposedly
a listing of all CDs currently in print. Included with each is the same
sound/performance ratings that appear in DA. Now I know the performance is
very subjective, but I expected the sound rating to be somewhat less so.
After buying and returning a copy of Led Zepplin's "Led Zepplin" due to hiss
louder than my 10 year old album, I checked a friend's copy of the catalog. It
listed the sound performance as a 6. So beware, methinks the lid to a chock
full of nuts can would rate at least a 4 by this scale!

32.17 | Green Catalog ratings. | COOKIE::ROLLOW | Redneck cookin'... Fryit! | Tue Oct 14 1986 12:16 | 7 |
| The rating in the Green Catalog are those sent in by "enough"
readers (us) to make a reasonable sample. I think the number
they use is at least 10. The other reviews are done by their
regular reviewers.

| I thought folks here might be amused at what I discovered this morning
while doing my duty as a "First in the Nation" voter. New Hampshire
allows people to place themselves on the ballot for Vice President,
though this is pretty meaningless as whoever the Presidential
candidate picks is usually VP. But some people do it for kicks.
Anyway, one of two people on the Republican ballot was our old
friend Wayne Green, publisher of Digital Audio! In a way I was almost
sorry I wasn't a Republican so I could vote against him....
